Elvis Presley changed Bruce Springsteen’s life with a famous song | music | entertainment

Over the weekend, Bruce Springsteen decorated the sofa of The Graham Norton Show on BBC One. The President, as he’s known, was promoting his new album, Only The Strong Survive, but the star wouldn’t have started playing music without Elvis Presley.

Elvis, of course, influenced many musicians and artists throughout his career, but Bruce previously referred to King as the beginning of his career.

He first saw Elvis when he performed on The Ed Sullivan Show on September 9, 1956.

Elvis was only 21 years old at the time, and he was introduced to the TV show by British superstar Charles Laughton, who was filling in for the honorary host that evening. Elvis has done a string of mega hits, including Don’t Be Cruel, Ready Teddy and the popular Hound Dog.

It was the last song on that list that left young Bruce completely blown away.

He said it was a song he “couldn’t live without”.

Bruce continued, “When I heard it, it went straight to my mind. Suddenly, I realized, there’s more to life than I’ve been living.”

Years later, Bruce attempted to break into the Elvis mansion house, Graceland.

26-year-old Bruce left him in 1976 on a tour of Memphis, Tennessee, and took a taxi to Graceland to pay his respects to the King.

He jumped on the fence, and dashed towards the doors of the building. But security stopped him at the last minute.

The guard asked, “Is Elvis home?” He was told, “No, Elvis isn’t home, he’s in Lake Tahoe.”

However, Bruce was not deterred. As he was escorted out of the building, the confined guards told him all about how famous he was, and how he had recently appeared on the cover of Time magazine.

“The guards didn’t buy it,” he said, before adding, “Later, I was wondering what I would say if I knocked on the door and if Elvis had come to the door because he wasn’t really going to see Elvis. But, it was as if he came and whispered some dream In everyone’s ear, somehow we’ve been dreaming about it. And maybe that’s why we’re here tonight, I don’t know.”
