A shooting took place on the Charlottesville campus, killing three people and wounding two others.
University police reported that the suspect is Christopher Darnell Johnson It is considered “armed and dangerous”.
Police also told community residents to stay home.
What happened in the shooting at the University of Virginia?
Police said at 22:30 local time that gunfire was heard in the Colbraith Road area of the campus.
“UVA ALERT: Active assailant firearm reported in Culbreth Road area. RUN HIDE FIGHT,” the department tweeted about 10 minutes later.
The shooting suspect was described as a black man wearing a burgundy jacket, blue jeans and red shoes, according to campus police. Maybe he was driving a black SUV.
The shelter remained in place for at least three hours as the suspect remained at large.

“As of this writing, I am saddened to be informed that the shooting has killed three people; two additional victims have been injured and are receiving medical care,” University of Virginia President Jim Ryan He said in a statement.
“We are working closely with the families of the victims, and will share additional details as soon as we are able.
“This is a message that any leader would hope they would not have to send, and I am shocked that this violence has visited the University of Virginia.
“I hold the victims, their families, and all members of the University of Virginia community in my heart today, and we will plan to come together as a community to grieve once the suspect is arrested.”
