Dragon Ball overtakes Gundam in New Bandai’s financial report

Dragon Ball has had a wild year, and thanks to some big releases, Son Goku is in the green. Saiyan has been bringing in big cash to Toei Animation lately, and as always, Shueisha’s team gets a check regularly thanks to the manga. And now, a new financial report from Bandai Namco shows that Dragon Ball is also banking on merchandise.

update It comes from the company in 2023 fiscal year ending in the third quarter. There was Bandai Namco’s confirmation that Dragon Ball is back on top in terms of IP sales, but merchandise totals still put Mobile Suit Gundam ahead.

Explanation of numbers

According to the financial report, Dragon Ball brought in 65.7 billion yen this year. It landed just ahead of Mobile Suit Gundam as the mecha series earned 62.4 billion yen. As for other IP sales, One Piece took third place with 44.1 billion yen before Kamen Rider, Naruto, and others round out the list.

Obviously, Dragon Ball made more money last quarter than total IP sales, but the same can’t be said for marketing. The series has definitely grossed well as Bandai Namco says Dragon Ball has grossed 12 billion yen in Japan. However, One Piece and Mobile Suit Gundam outsold the IP with 12.3 billion and 30.1 billion yen, respectively.

As you can tell, Dragon Ball has no problem making money, and it’s still one of Bandai Namco’s best-selling IPs. Its totals have been boosted recently thanks to the release of Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero, but one movie every few years can’t sustain a franchise. At some point, Bandai Namco’s returns on Dragon Ball will disappear, and the only thing that will bring them back is a full return.
