Former DC Films president Walter Hamada joins Paramount in a fearsome new role

Walter Hamada already has his next film job. Hamada got his start at DC Films, a studio now run by DC Studios, and he landed a job at Paramount. In his new role, he’ll oversee Summit’s horror production, a genre he’s particularly good at after helping launch New Line record label Sorcery franchise. With Paramount’s Smile making a big box office comeback from a modest budget, Hamada’s goal will be to see low- and mid-budget horror films through development.

“With his track record of unprecedented success, Walter is the ideal partner and visionary to build our mainstream horror genre franchise business,” Paramount Pictures president and CEO Brian Robbins said in a statement (via Deadline). As evidenced by the impressive performance of smiling, High-concept original storytelling is in great demand in the global market, and we look forward to a long and successful partnership.”

Hamada added, “I am delighted to be collaborating with Paramount Pictures with the singular goal of creating exceptional films in the horror genre. Over the course of my career, there has been nothing more satisfying than discovering emerging filmmakers and writers for the first time and letting them shine in a studio setting.” Thank you Brian and the entire team at Paramount Pictures for this tremendous opportunity, I can’t wait to get started.”

Prior to his role at DC Films, Hamada was Executive Vice President of Production at New Line where he worked on nearly all of its productions. Sorcery Clicks as well as rebooting the It franchise with a pair of well-received films.

Meanwhile at Warner Bros. Discovery, DC Films has been replaced by the new DC Studios in an effort to consolidate all DC-related stories under the roof. The new outfit is being worn by Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn and veteran producer Peter Safran.

“We’re honored to be the overseers of the DC characters we’ve loved since we were kids,” the duo said in a joint statement earlier this month. “We look forward to collaborating with the world’s most talented writers, directors, and actors to create an integrated, multi-layered universe that still allows for individual expression by the artists involved. Our commitment to Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Harley Quinn, and the rest of the established DC characters is only equaled by our commitment to the wonders of human possibility that these characters represent. We’re excited to revitalize the theatrical experience around the world as we tell some of the biggest, most beautiful, most amazing stories ever.”
