The letter read: “Five months ago, the verdict in the defamation trial between Johnny Depp and Amber Heard deeply disturbed many professionals in the field of intimate partner and sexual violence…”

“The defamation of Ms. Hurd and the ongoing online harassment of her and those who have expressed support for her has been unprecedented in its vitriol and scale.”

The lengthy statement continued, “Much of this harassment was fueled by misinformation, misogyny, spousal fear, and a monetized social media environment where women’s allegations of domestic violence and sexual assault were mocked for entertainment.”

“The same misinformation and victim blaming are now being used against others who have alleged abuse.”

“In our view, the ruling in Depp v. Heard and the ongoing rhetoric around it indicates a fundamental misunderstanding of sexual and intimate partner violence and how survivors respond to it.”

“We have significant concerns about the increasing misuse of defamation lawsuits to threaten and silence survivors.”

The letter concluded, “We condemn and share in support of the public shaming of Amber Heard. We support everyone’s ability to report intimate partner and sexual violence without harassment and intimidation.”

Neither Amber Heard nor Johnny Depp have spoken about the letter yet.
