Weather tracker: A serious blizzard blankets the shape of Lake Buffalo, western New York

New York Gov. Kathy Hochul declared a state of emergency Thursday for parts of western New York, including communities along the eastern edges of Lake Erie and Lake Ontario. Hochul’s state of emergency covers 11 districts, with commercial truck traffic banned from a stretch of Highway 90.

Erie County Executive Mark Poloncars It issued a driving ban effective Thursday night, shortly after heavy snow punctuated by thunder and lightning moved to Buffalo. The ban on non-emergency road vehicles was reduced to a warning for the city of Buffalo on Friday, Poloncars said, but the ban remained in effect in some other parts of the county. Heavy snowfall was expected to continue into Friday evening, with more falling from Saturday into Sunday.

The weather service also warned of snow accumulations of 2 feet (0.6 metres) or more Northern New York on the eastern edge of Lake Ontario, and in parts of Northern Michigan through Sunday. Parts of Pennsylvania also saw lake-effect snow accumulations.
