Nintendo Switch online update may be good news for GameCube fans

Nintendo’s new Nintendo Switch Online update could be good news for Switch, Switch Lite, and Switch OLED users hoping to play more GameCube games on the system. Having previously offered only NES and SNES games, Nintendo recently expanded the Switch Online library with the “Expansion Pack,” a more expensive tier that added Sega Genesis and N64 games into the mix. Many are expecting the next GameCube games, but at the moment Nintendo has not confirmed this. However, they may have triggered it while Recent earnings call And while talking to investors.

When asked by an investor about how Nintendo plans to increase Switch Online subscribers, Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa quipped that Nintendo is “considering various initiatives” and “further improvements”.

“As of September 2022, the number of paid Nintendo Switch Online members has exceeded 36 million,” Furukawa said. While there are some users who choose not to renew their memberships once they expire, overall the number of members is growing, along with more people playing Nintendo Switch and titles that support online play. In addition to the Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack service, which we started last year, represents a gradually increasing percentage of total memberships thanks to the addition of Nintendo 64 partial titles.”

Follow Furukawa:

“The goal of Nintendo Switch Online as a service is to help users enjoy playing on Nintendo Switch for a long time, so we are considering various initiatives, including further improvements to the content of the service. As we discussed in today’s presentation, the goal is to continue to use a Nintendo Account to maintain We build on long and positive relationships with our customers. In line with this strategy, we see Nintendo Switch Online as our initiative to encourage our users to continue enjoying Nintendo Switch for many years to come.”

As you can see, there’s nothing here intentionally teasing the Nintendo GameCube, but the mention of the N64 and then talk of “more improvements” immediately afterwards seems to point to more legacy consoles coming to the subscription service. And if that happens, you’d assume the GameCube is next in line as the next major console, though there’s always the possibility that the first handheld, the Game Boy, will be introduced first.
