It was that moment when I had a good sense of humor about it before I got really sad about it. I literally remember getting the call because my boyfriend was at my house. It was a few days into my audition, I felt really good about it, and Joe Kosinski called and said, “Hey, you know we go with Miles.” I was like, “Okay, you guys are going to make a great movie.” I appreciate this opportunity. My boyfriend even took a picture of me, thinking I’d get the part. So I was sitting on the porch alone in an American flag tank top with Airmen on… It was so sad on so many levels.
Lucky for Powell, shortly after the tweet went viral, he got a phone call from the movie’s star, Tom Cruise, nudging him into a completely different role.
So within an hour, the press was obsessed with choosing Miles, and he was all over the place. And I said, “I’m going to say something silly and funny.” Then sadness hit the next day, so I’m really glad I got this tweet before that. And then the experience of Tom Cruise calling me and pushing me into this whole other thing happened with Jerry Bruckheimer and Joe Kosinski and Chris McCurry, and I’m so glad I did it.
Glen Powell thought, in hindsight, that the tweet was something very strange, but admit that you never know what little act of humor can change your life.
