Wooper’s new twist is inspired by a seriously spoiled lizard

Wooper’s new, evolved shape was inspired by one of Spain’s strangest lizard species. The regional Paldean variant of Wooper is a distinctly brown version of the familiar amphibious Pokémon. Unlike the regular version of Wooper, which is a Water/Ground-type Pokemon, Paldean Wooper is a Poison/Ground-type. It also evolves into a completely new Pokémon – Clodsire, which is described as a “Spiny Fish” Pokémon. As the normal version of Wooper evolves into Quagsire at level 20, Paldean Wooper evolves into Clodsire at level 20.

One of the strange things about Clodsire includes the spines that sometimes protrude from his back. Pokedex notes that when these thorns appear, Clodsire puts “everything on the line,” but doesn’t provide further details. This is likely a reference to the ribbed Iberian newt, a lizard native to Spain and Portugal that has sharp ribs that can pierce its skin when attacked. The ribs actually act as a defense mechanism for the newt, as the newt begins secreting venom when the ribs pierce the skin, turning it into rudimentary needles. Essentially, when a predator presses on a newt, the newt’s ribs will crack the skin and puncture the predator’s mouth, poisoning it in the process. The nature of the newt’s immune system and its ability to heal means that the newt suffers remarkably little damage when its ribs are literally detached from its body.

For those looking to get a Wooper that doesn’t evolve into a self-harming landfish, players can get a normal Wooper in Cascarrafa. A girl offers to trade a Paldean Wooper for an ordinary Wooper named Manchester. This Wooper evolves into a Quagsire as usual, although a Quagsire is not necessary to complete the Paldean Pokedex.
