What is the danger! controversy about?
On the November 16 episode of Risk!Championship of Champions Featured Players Amy Schneider, Andrew Ho and Sam Patry, the last danger class “New Testament” put forward an idea: “Paul’s letter to them is the New Testament letter that contains the oldest quotations from the Old Testament.” Schneider’s answer was accepted for “Hebrews”, while Pottery was held to be incorrect for saying “Romans”.
Many fans on Twitter immediately disagreed Risk!Judgment, noting that while it was previously believed that Paul wrote the Epistle to the Hebrews, most scholars now believe the author is unknown. One fan explained:
When you need to study theology to answer Jeopardy… Challenge: Hebrews has the most Old Testament quotations of any NT character; Historically it was attributed to Paul. But today most people would argue he didn’t write it based mainly on internal evidence (the Romans are right if Paul didn’t write the Hebrews) https://t.co/iBf5Y1jSSLNovember 17, 2022
Andrew Ho ended up winning the ring, but had Sam Buttery’s response been accepted, he would have been the one to take the victory.
Risk! Producers are responding to the backlash
long time Risk! Producer Sarah Foss and research senior Michael Harris touched on the Championship of Champions controversy Inside Jeopardy! (Opens in a new tab) podcast, with Voss reassuring viewers that a lot of research goes into each piece of evidence, and in this case, she said regarding Hebrews that “authorship is traditionally attributed to Paul, though some say unconfirmed.”
The explanation for the show appears to lie in the fact that the King James Version of the Bible historically credits Paul as the author of Hebrews, and contestants are said to be aware that it is the version of the Bible used in Risk!. Michael Harris also detailed the additional research that was done for the class, stating that they reached out to a Bible scholar, who agreed on the accuracy of the evidence. The researcher said:
This was the second time Risk! She found herself a target of wrath in recent days. On the November 13 episode of Celebrity Danger!, evidence verified by Brian Laundry, who was found dead after being accused of murdering his girlfriend, Gabby Petito. The response they were looking for in the clue about an animal to be found in Florida’s Myakkahatchee Creek area was an alligator, and several of them—including the Laundrie family—were Angry at the ‘distasteful’ guide.
We hope such controversies don’t last, though we guarantee we won’t see more dismay over the Tournament of Champions rings as giant champion Amy Schneider snagged the win, and $250,000 prize, when the smoke cleared after Monday’s final round. But we can be sure that fans will speak out if they feel something isn’t above board post-ToC.
