To reduce knee pain and soothe my sore joints, I got to work testing the highly regarded Hydragun HeatPulse Knee Massager, a promising new knee massage therapy from recovery technology giants.
We’ve tried and tested some of the best massage guns on the market but even so, this model just doesn’t Technically Fitted into a massage gun holster, it’s a pocket rocket knee massager regardless.
Percussion therapy (massage guns) has grown in popularity over recent years, giving anyone from professional athletes to casual gym-goers the chance to dig into recovery without the obnoxious massage therapist fee. The Cleveland Clinic (Opens in a new tab)Even found that massage guns can improve muscle recovery, reduce fatigue, and increase range of motion and blood flow in the target area.
With this in mind, I tested the Hydragun HeatPulse Knee Massager daily for one month to see if it worked. truly It can improve my knee pain.
What is the Hydragun HeatPulse Knee Massager?
Traditional manual massage guns use powerful vibration and pressure to treat tired, achy muscles. They are similar to DIY home workouts but serve as a do-it-yourself home massage solution instead. What’s the downside? The sheer force makes it unsuitable for your joints.
The Hydragun HeatPulse Knee Massager works safely on your knees without the force or hack of a standard massage gun. Instead, it comfortably wraps around your knee like a support brace and uses soothing heat and gentle vibrational pulsations to target and relieve knee pain.
As a CrossFit athlete (find out what happened when I trained like a CrossFit athlete), I’m no stranger to tired knees and can’t wait to get my hands on HeatPulse for some much-needed R&R.
I wore the Hydragun HeatPulse Knee Massager every day for a month – this is what happened to my knees
I decided to treat my knees with a daily massage in an effort to relieve my knee pain. Here’s what happened.
1. It was very relaxing
I wore the Hydragun HeatPulse Knee Massager every day for a month, once or twice a day, for 30 minutes each session. The first thing you notice is how much heat it packs, which ranges from 40-60°C (104-140°F) using five settings. I kept it on high so my knees got a little sweaty, but my sweaty knees aside, it was also very comfortable.
The vibration was stronger than I expected, and it might take some getting used to, but there are three speeds between 80-100Hz, so this is customizable to your preference. Once I settled in, I really enjoyed being able to strap this on anywhere, anytime for a quick massage on the go.
In fact, it’s so quiet that I’ve found myself wearing it on my morning dog walks and in the office without infuriating anyone in my vicinity.
2. It is not just a knee massager
Despite its name, the HeatPulse knee massager is also suitable for your elbows and shoulders. It’s a one-stop-shop for all things dodgy – and considering I have a long term rotator cuff injury, this was heavenly music to my ears.
This set comes with a customizable wrap and extension strap, allowing you to wrap the massager around your shoulder or elbow without any fuss. I found it didn’t quite fit my elbow, but I definitely get to test it on my shoulder more often which is great news if you’re currently budgeting.
3. I only noticed short-term knee pain relief
This knee massager has been attracting a lot of attention and praise from chiropractors and physical therapists, so I decided to do some digging around the technology.
HeatPulse uses graphene infrared technology called HeatLast to provide consistent warmth to soothe knee pain. When paired with dual vibration cores, the massager will “Hug on either side of your knees and deliver targeted impulses to your kneecap.
The idea is that this stimulates circulation, improves oxygen and nutrient delivery to the damaged area, and relieves tightness, pain, and soreness. some Research (Opens in a new tab) He explains that infrared can improve knee pain and symptoms of osteoarthritis, and people with arthritis have reported faster recovery, pain relief, and relief of joint tension with the use of the garment.
However, so far I have noticed temporary relief. Yes it is he is Relaxed, and my knees felt freer afterward, but I didn’t notice any significant change. I probably need to use it for longer periods, but my dreams of getting my knee back completely still do, unfortunately.
4. The science is not there yet
There is still a lack of solid evidence to support massage gun therapy in general and many of the current studies are small in scale.
Search (Opens in a new tab) Pros include a study of massage therapy and DOMs (Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness), which found significant improvements after 24, 48, and 72 hours when using massage therapy. And another study published Journal of Sports Science and Medicine (Opens in a new tab) I just found this five minutes of targeted rhythm therapy can improve range of motion and flexibility.
I found that my knee massager was most beneficial when used immediately after a workout, but I did not notice any significant improvement in my range of motion after 30 minutes of using it. Moreover, there is another study on Efficacy and safety of massage in case of knee osteoarthritis (Opens in a new tab)found that although massage therapy offers a highly safe, low-cost solution, the current research lacks any comprehensive evaluation.
I wore the Hydragun HeatPulse knee massager every day for a month – my verdict
While the jury is still out on the long-term effectiveness of home massagers, I like using my tools as a tool for post-workout relaxation rather than dwelling on my hopes for a standalone solution to my knee pain. But I would still recommend anyone with chronic knee pain see a qualified medical professional first and manage expectations about any miraculous results.
