Namor, as played by Tenoch Huerta, has just made his movie debut in Marvel’s Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, which led to the popularity of one of Marvel’s oldest and most iconic characters. Now, an original piece of art by Namor creator Bill Everett has been sold at auction for big bucks. according to Hollywood ReporterAn original Everett piece of art from 1968 recently sold for $10,800 via Heritage Auctions.

The artwork is a proprietary illustration engraved by fanzine publisher Martin Greim. The engraving contains a description of Namor as the “original grumpy young man” on the piece, which sees two images of Namor, one more in keeping with his original appearance from his first creation, and then one that is softer and less angular. The Silver Age takes on the personal. According to the description, there are a few of Everett’s own illustrations, which makes this drawing particularly unique.

Namor was first created by Everett and first appeared in 1939 Motion Picture Funnies weekly #1 before his first public appearance on the Marvel comics #1 in October 1939. The first comic book anti-hero, Namor has been at various points in his character’s history both an antagonist and a hero, serving with the Avengers, X-Men, Defenders, Invaders, Fantastic Four, and even the Illuminati.

As for Everett, the creator sadly passed away in 1973 at the age of 55, making this particular piece of art one of the last pieces of his career. He had triumphantly returned to the title of Sub-Mariner in June 1972, having full control of the book, writing, drawing and inking the series until his health finally got in the way.
