Cold nights are some of the best action nights out there, and the best new movies streaming online this week include new titles from movie theaters. Including one I just saw in theaters last week. The biggest new movie of the week online is Black Adam, streaming video-on-demand online today.
DC’s latest movie, Black Adam shakes things up by adding another super-powered being to a world that needs more help with order and chaos than anything else. Are you anticipating Black Adam on HBO Max now? Well, our best guess is that it’s coming mid-December, no later than the 19th.
The week’s other two big VOD releases The Woman King and the hilarious class warfare thriller Triangle of Sadness were lauded. In a month when billionaires lose so much money, the latter really feels like a fit.
Elsewhere, Netflix and HBO Max lean into the festive fun with The Noel Diary and Holiday Harmony.
Want something more dramatic and realistic? Ghislaine Maxwell’s Netflix documentary looks to shed light on how he helped Jeffrey Epstein, and features interviews with sex trafficking survivors.

Black Adam
Black Adam, superstar Dwayne Johnson’s passion project for years, gives the DC Universe a multitude of movies and shows a big new hero to fight with the rest. It doesn’t come alone either. Black Adam also introduces a lot of other comic book heroes to the big screen, like Dr. Fate (Pierce Brosnan), Hawkman (Aldis Hodge), Cyclone (Quintessa Swindell), and Atom Smasher (Noah Centineo).
Despite this, Black Adam (Dwayne Johnson) wasn’t Black Adam to begin with. The movie is a huge origin story that features him as Teth-Adam, who was imprisoned back in 2600 BC. Now that he’s been set free, this muscular brute has some missions to do: catch up on comic timing, rescue the people of Kahndaq in the Middle East and help a child and his mother linked to his escape.
I’ve heard a lot of different take on the movie, so I’ll admit that my least likable view isn’t shared by everyone. If you lower your expectations, you will most likely find Black Adam interesting. I just thought there was too much going on for me to feel like anything really mattered. A huge building block for DC movies from now on, you’ll want to stay in range Black Adam post-credit scene that had my play applause.

Sadness triangle
These days, you hear a lot of people say “eat rich”. To that, I’ll add, “Well, not those…they probably don’t taste that good anymore.” Winner of the prestigious Palme d’Or at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival, Triangle of Sadness is about the mayhem that the rich can cause on a luxury yacht. As we board the yacht with a pair of models who are romantically involved, Carl (Harris Dickinson) and Yaya (Sharlby Dean Creek) soon meet an entire ship full of wealthier people, and none of them get along.
Then, chaos ensues as the ship hits the murky waters. The ship’s captain (Woody Harrelson) seems as childish and inept as everyone else, and it’s up to the hard-working crew members to try and get out of there alive. Hilarious, and in love with humor that might remind you of a certain Family Guy story, Triangle of Sadness is a solid farce.

The King’s Woman
The Woman King, who surprisingly reigned supreme at the box office, is finally going home. The film, based on true events, focuses on the Agoji tribe – the most powerful all-female army in world history. Viola Davis plays General Nanska, a fictional character who leads the women, earning rave reviews for her performance. Their Blossoms also earn them Thoso Mebidu, who plays a warrior named Nawi, and John Boyega, who plays King Gezo, who doesn’t always get along with Nanska.
Sadly, not everyone thinks The Woman King is worth watching, as arguments have surfaced for a boycott online, due to the failure to address the Kingdom of Dahomey’s involvement in slavery. Stars Viola Davis and Julius Tennon (who are also married and producing partners) responded by saying diverse (Opens in a new tab) that this film is not intended to be the complete history of the tribe.

Good Night Oppy (Prime Video)
The closest thing we’ve got to Wall E in this lifetime (at least we hope humanity isn’t stuck in that vision of the future), Good Night Oppy is a documentary that shows us the beauty of a cool robot in outer space. And it might be the perfect Thanksgiving movie for the whole family.
Opportunity, a Mars exploration rover that has earned the nickname Obi, not only looks a bit like Pixar’s interplanetary bot, but it’s set off on its own adventures, too. You’ll watch Oppy “stare” at dust storms, and learn how he routinely shatters expectations about what he can survive. Narrated by Angela Bassett.

Holiday Harmony (HBO Max)
Gail (Annelise Cepero) is making her way to her ambitions as a singer/songwriter. Her goal, to power the iHeartRadio Christmas Eve special (which sounds like the biggest product of the month), is within her reach.
At least that was the case, until the alpacas got in their way. In the most special holiday moment we can remember (at least since Lindsay Lohan dropped Christmas last week), Jill finds herself stranded in a small town where her aspirations seem too big for Jeremy (Jeremy Sumpter), who helps her fix her car. He also helps her out of town, and prepares her to teach school children who need help learning how to play music.

Noel Diaries (Netflix)
Want more holiday magic this season? Well, the Netflix story about hit writer Jacob Turner (Justin Hartley) starts off a little sad, as he returns home after his mother’s death, only to run into Rachel (Barrett Doss), who is also trying to get to know her mother.
The two go on a road trip to learn more about their pasts, while Rachel snaps at Jacob’s odd bachelorhood – he’s too much of a hunk. Eventually, they learn more and more about their family history, and begin to bond with them.

Ghislaine Maxwell: Filthy Rich (Netflix)
You may know Jeffrey Epstein, who pleaded guilty and was convicted in 2008 on child prostitution charges. As you may also know, Epstein was arrested again in 2019 for trafficking minors — which he’s been accused of doing to a number of superstar celebrities — before he died in his cell, in an act that investigators deemed suicide. But how well do you know his partner, Ghislaine Maxwell?
Netflix’s latest major true crime doc looks to pull back the curtain on Ms. Maxwell, interview some of their victims and follow her criminal trial that ran from 2020 to 2021.
Watch it Netflix (Opens in a new tab) Starting Friday (25 November)
