Joe Jonas Talks Therapy, “Spider-Man” and “Loyalty”

Joe Jonas is disappointed with his history teachers. He says it’s a pity he never learned about Jesse Brown, the Navy’s first black fighter pilot who served in the Korean War.

Brown’s time in the war and friendship with fellow pilot Tom Hudner (played by Glen Powell) is chronicled in the film “Dedication,” directed by JD Dillard. Jonas plays pilot Marty Goode.

“I don’t know if I’m going to be mad at my history teachers,” Jonas told me on this week’s episode of the “Just for Variety” podcast. “When I got the audition. I read the book, I read the script, I met the director and I said, ‘How did I not hear this story of these two amazing, brave people and the Korean War?’ I think in school you go from World War II and then you get through that.” [the Korean War] We don’t focus on it enough.”

Jonas’ brother also co-wrote and performed (with Khaled) the film’s post-credits song, “Not Alone”. The accompanying music video features veterans and active duty personnel.

“They come home and they’re not always treated well…we have to take care of them, they’re so important and I wanted to touch on that,” Jonas says. “They are also not alone. We are here for you. Let’s have a conversation, connect, pick up the phone, call the person who served us and check in.”

Since its release, “Not Alone” has entered the Oscars conversation for Best Original Song, along with tracks from Rihanna, Lady Gaga, Taylor Swift, and Selena Gomez.

“They’re all so great and I love all the songs I’ve heard they’ve done,” Jonas says of the potential competition. “They’re on my shortlist of playlists. It’s been a busy year in music and TV and film. I’m just grateful to be in that conversation. I think with the 17, 18 years of experience that I have at this point, I’m thankful that I’ve been able to do what I love. I know.” That sounds like a very political answer here, but you’d drive yourself crazy if you obsessed with it. That’s why I have such a great therapist. I try to just focus on the opportunity I get making music. That was something I never expected would happen.”

Tell me about your audition for “dedication”.

It’s been a minute since I made any explicit representation. The pandemic has really given me a lot of time. Touring wasn’t really an option, so I was like, well, what am I going to do with myself here? I obviously love acting and it’s something I’ve always wanted to get back to. It was like any other test process. Putting myself on tape and called back on tape, I met with director J.D., we talked about the project and it went from there. Then this past January, I moved to Savannah, Georgia, for two months. It was a wild experience.

Does Joe Jonas get nervous when he puts himself on tape?

When you have a wife like Sophie Turner, who’s an amazing actress, who films you and guides you through, you have to bring up your A-game. She’s my toughest critic. Yes, I’ll be a little nervous [but she’s] Very informative and I feel like a great acting coach is guiding me through this. And she has to thank her.

What’s the first remark Sophie made to you where you realize, “Oh, she’s really telling me what to do?”

That’s when I think I’m getting over it, and then she says, “No, you have to do that again.” I’m like, “Shit!” But that’s what it’s about. I’m glad she gave me her honest opinion. That’s what you need.

How did it feel to put on a military uniform for the first time and see yourself marching?

I remember walking into a movie setting and looking at all the pictures of young people. For some reason they decided to pick a bunch of shirtless pictures of these guys. And I’m like, “Damn, I’m going to need to work out a little bit more.” This was the first thing. Then, you put on that uniform, but there’s no way to compare to what these actual people are going through and what their lives are like. We just play dress up at the end of the day. I have an army in my family. My grandfather served. My cousin Eric is a naval officer and he’s highly ranked. I called him and asked him a million questions for about an hour when I found out I got the part.

Can you imagine yourself on the Oscars stage?

I can imagine it. Kevin [Jonas] He was on stage last year. Play with Reba McIntyre. so cold. I’m like, “Hell, yeah, how, you’re the first sibling to do that.” It’s like, “I have bragging rights for life.”

I must say the fact that you mentioned your therapist, it is not very common for someone like you to mention that they are in therapy. That’s impressive.

I spoke to her for an hour before our call. We have to check with ourselves. It is very important. I move millions of miles an hour as you move from one city to another. Also at the end of the day, we are just human and we have to take care of each other and check in on ourselves. There were years when I didn’t take care of myself and I’d go and go and go and get crazy and feel really touched by every little thing. Then you talk to someone and you say, “Oh, that’s why.”

Do you remember a role you took on to destroy you when you didn’t get it?

I can probably name a couple. In this moment, you are broken or defeated. But you do realize that this person was amazing. I remember years ago I was with Spider-Man and I was really excited and it was the year Andrew Garfield got it. Obviously, he was the right person. But I remember it was a big thing at the time, going back to take back calls and the director was working as a music video director. So I was like, “I got in here.” But did you know? I love the audition process and putting yourself out there and having to prove yourself.

Did they put you in a speedy suit?

No, but I’m sure I have one that I’ll try to do once in a while in the day.

Will you and Sophie work together?

Oh interesting. who do you know I think it’s about the right role or project. I think it will be interesting. We love the idea of maybe building a project or projects together down the road. We have a lot of ideas and we’re bouncing ideas off of each other and we’ve got a few things that we thought might be really fun to collaborate on. Maybe just wear our product hat and put it out there.
