Linda eventually died on April 17, 1998 at the McCartney family farm in Tucson, Arizona. She was surrounded by the McCartneys and their four children, Mary, Stella, James and Heather.
Shortly afterwards, Linda’s body was cremated and returned to England. McCartney spreads her ashes at the McCartney family farm in Sussex.
A heartbroken McCartney released a statement revealing his last words to his wife. “You’re on your beautiful Appaloosa stallion,” he told Linda on her deathbed. “It’s a fine spring day. We’re riding through the woods. The blue bells are all out, and the sky’s a clear blue.” “I had barely reached the end of the sentence when she closed her eyes and slipped gently,” he added.
McCartney continued in his statement, “Our family is so close that her death left a huge hole in our lives. We will never get over it, but I think we will accept it, total heartbreak.”
A memorial service was held at St Martin-in-the-Fields in London, on 8 June 1998. The emotional celebration of Linda’s life was attended by family and close friends, with appearances by some famous faces including George Harrison, Ringo Starr, Billy Joel, Elton John and David Gilmore and Peter Gabriel.
