Samsung T7 Shield Portable SSD

Samsung’s T7 Shield is the external SSD I use for my most important data. It features a rugged exterior that protects against drops and bumps, is IP65 rated to keep out dust and water, and delivers excellent read and write speeds over USB 3.2 (Gen 2). The 2TB version, which is available in beige, black and blue colors, is currently on a deep discount on Black Friday.

I’ve used a lot of different storage solutions over the years to keep my data safe, but I’ve recently switched to Samsung’s (relatively) new T7 Shield external SSD as my daily carry. I work with a lot of different media for my work and for different hobbies, and it’s always nice to know that my data is super safe when I need to leave the house or the office. The “Shield” name comes from its rubberized casing, which provides additional protection against drops and shocks of up to three metres, as well as an IP65 water and dust resistance rating.

If you’re hard on your gear, this might be the only thing keeping your data from being annihilated. Samsung and Amazon both have the largest 2TB models on sale for $150 on Black Friday. Get beige, black or blue colors to suit your style.

Why I love the Samsung T7 Shield SSD

Samsung sent me two of these drives for testing earlier this year, and I fell in love instantly. These drives are so compact, that they’re about the same size as a credit card (although much thicker). The protective casing has ridges that help you grip firmly even if the SSD gets wet, and it also adds three-meter drop protection.

What really sets it apart from the T7 (our pick for best portable SSD) and T7 Touch is its IP65 water and dust resistance rating, which is especially important for photographers working in the field. I don’t do anything like dare, but I can drop my SSD in a laptop bag and not have to worry about it getting damaged. I also don’t have to worry about getting caught in the rain if it’s in my back pocket.

T7 Shield is durable, and it’s also safe. It may lack the fingerprint reader that the T7 Touch offers, but it does include 256-bit AES encryption with a password of your choice. Misplacing the drive will not cause the new owner to search through all your files. And what would an external SSD be without fast transfer speeds? The T7 Shield can reach read speeds of 1050MB/s and write speeds of 1000MB/s, allowing you to transfer huge files in a matter of moments. Samsung ships each drive with USB-C and USB-A cables to help you connect to more devices.

These drives aren’t cheap, and I might even recommend them at full price. That all changed on Black Friday, when the largest 2TB models dropped to $150 on both Amazon and the official Samsung site. This is the lowest price I’ve seen for 2TB drives, which puts them at about the same price as 1TB models usually sell for. If you’re looking for a high-quality SSD with added protection, this is one of the best you’ll find.
