Dragon Ball asked HR experts to rate how awful Frieza is as a boss

It’s no secret that Frieza is a terrifying man. From the day of the character’s introduction, Dragon Ball has emphasized the villain’s worst traits. Tyrannical and kind-hearted, Frieza embodies some of the worst traits a person can have, which only gets worse when you remember that Frieza is the head of thousands of warriors. These soldiers may have the worst boss in the galaxy, and to confirm this, the team behind Dragon Ball asked a human resources expert to think about it.

The research comes courtesy of the official Dragon Ball website where the webpage posted an extended interview the other day. It was there that Jun Nakahara, an HR author from Japan, sat down to talk about Frieza’s leadership abilities. And while everyone agreed the guy was crazy, Nakahara says Frieza is a better leader than we give him credit for.

Call Mr. Frieza

When asked if Frieza is an adequate leader, the HR expert admits that the guy meets the top three hires any good leader offers. “There are three things that are vital in order to get people to do what they want: give clear orders, maintain consistency, and explain yourself logically. I would say Frieza meets those requirements for a T,” he said. “Conveying your orders succinctly is also important. This does not mean trying to convey everything in one sentence, but instead making each order short and direct. This makes it easy to make even inexperienced subordinates fall in line.”

However, no amount of leadership training can cover Frieza’s tough personality. While the man is in many ways the perfect leader, his moral corruption negates most gains. “If you look at the way Frieza talks and acts on a purely superficial level, you can definitely call him a ‘great boss,'” says Nakahara.

“If you sum it up, Frieza’s management style is Machiavellian at its core. He will do anything and everything to achieve his goals. I think his words, actions, and behavior all indicate a narcissistic, psychopathic person. In psychology, someone who has Machiavellian, narcissistic, and psychopathic traits has a personality known as As the “dark trinity”: someone who takes pleasure in the pain and suffering of others. Needless to say, this is not something to be encouraged or aspired to in any way.”

Obviously, there are pros and cons to any driving style, and Frieza has more flaws than most. It is impossible to think of a worse motivator for workers than the fear of death. So if you ever thought about working with Frieza’s power, you might want to think again…
