I’ve always had that image in my head of that huge, huge withdrawal. A picture that was very touching. I think it was in the 1970’s, it was taken from the Earth, I think the Moon. And it kind of sparked the environmental movement in the ’70s. It has become a kind of visual signature. And it really affected me too, because you see Earth as this vulnerable and isolated and beautiful planet, and it kind of hits you, that’s all. This is our world. We’re not going to Mars, sorry Elon, we’re not going to Mars yet. This is our place. This is our place, this is our world, it is beautiful and it deserves our protection. And so that photograph of Earth taken in the 1970s was central to the idea of withdrawing from our living continent into this world that sits there in isolation.
Hall is referring to a 1972 photo known as the “blue marble” taken by the Apollo 17 crew 18,000 miles from Earth on its way to the Moon. It is a distinct image of our planet that ultimately inspired Hall strange world. As the film wraps up, he hopes to evoke the feeling he had looking at that picture and realizing that our collective home deserves to be cared for and protected. On a story level, Qui Nguyen said this on the subject:
As a metaphor, it’s also great when you just remember how small you are, but how you feel so small and how you shouldn’t be able to affect something so big, you really do. Like at the end of the day, these two characters discover this thing that will ultimately save Avalonia. And so it was a reminder that we each have a role to play on our planet.
Although the Clades have no idea about it, their discovery of Avalonia, which ultimately saves him, also saves their entire world, as they are all there is on the planet.
