“It was a terrible night.”

Will Smith movie Release It’s set to premiere on Apple TV+ on December 9, and the actor has been making the press rounds to support it — and ask questions about Chris Rock’s infamous slap at the 94th Academy Awards earlier this year. Now, in appearances on The Daily Show with Trevor NoahSmith talks about the incident, calling it a “horrible night”.

Smith said (trans diverse). “There are many nuances and complexities to that. But at the end of the day, I just — I lost it, you know? I was going through something that night, you know? It doesn’t excuse my behavior at all… It was a lot of things.” It was the little boy who watched his father beat up. His mother, you know? It all melted away in that moment. That’s not what I want to be.”

Smith also shared about how the incident affected his personal life, sharing an anecdote about meeting his young nephew after the Oscars.

He said, “I’m gone.” “This was a bottled-up rage for a really long time. My nephew is nine. He’s the sweetest little boy. We just got home. He stayed up late to see his Uncle Will and we’re sitting in my kitchen, and he’s on my lap, holding his Oscar.” And it’s just like, “Why did you hit that guy, Uncle Will?” Damn, why would you try Oprah for me?

Weeks after Smith slapped Rock at the annual awards ceremony, the Academy banned him from attending any Academy-sanctioned events for the next ten years. Shortly after announcing his discontinuation, the actor officially apologized to the comedian and his family.

“I want to apologize to Chris’ mom. I saw an interview that Chris’ mom did, and that was one of the things in that moment,” Smith said in July. “I didn’t realize, and I wasn’t thinking [about] How many people were injured at that moment. I want to apologize to Chris’ mom, I want to apologize to Chris’ family, specifically Tony Rock. We had a great relationship. Tony Rock was my man, and this probably can’t be fixed.”

“I have spent the last three months replaying and understanding the nuances and complexities of what happened at that moment,” said Smith’s apology. And I’m not going to try to unpack all of that now, but I can tell you all [that] No part of me thought that was the right way to act at that moment. There is no part of me that thinks this is the best way to deal with feeling disrespected or insulted.”
