Surprise suitor Jacob DeGrom emerged to challenge the Mets, the others

Many eyes were on New York Mets’ Jacob DeGrom, and some teams were starting to pop up seemingly out of nowhere.

New York Mets ace Jacob deGrom hit the free agent market, and the team took to the floor running after the star player. He’s undoubtedly one of the best rookies in the league, so it’s no surprise that he’s in great demand.

The rumor mill has been constantly swirling about the Mets, New York Yankees and Texas Rangers as the teams most likely to sign him. While everyone was focused on those three, the Tampa Bay Rays crept into the mix, as they did She reportedly spoke with Camp Degrum.

Rays are not necessarily known to spend a lot. According to Andy Martino of SNY.tv, the Rays beat Freddie Freeman last winter and assured him of his “quality of life and lack of Florida state income tax.”

If they don’t turn the money over to Freeman, they’re not likely to turn over to deGrom. They’re not as rich as the Mets or Yankees, so there’s little chance the Rays could outsmart these two in particular.

However, Rays is too bold to ask about it at first. While they do have a good rotation, there is no rotation in the league that deGrom wouldn’t make better.

Jacob deGrom is in a class of his own, so it’s no surprise that the Rays would be interested

DeGrom was on another level of talent this past season. He had plenty of time as he finished the 2021 season in early July and started the 2022 season in August, but he wasted no time getting back in the game.

He started 11 games in 2021 and over that span, he produced an ERA of 3.08, a batting average for . 175 and a WHIP of 0.75. This was not unusual either. WHIP has not generated over 1.00 since 2017 or BAA over 0.200 since 2019.

He is truly one of the best players in the league. Any team would be lucky to have him, no matter how good their rotation. The Rays are weird out of nowhere, but DeGrom definitely deserves it.
