Almodóvar’s Pedro Pascal-Ethan Hawke Gay Western Opens in Cannes

Pedro Almodovar has revealed that his short Western, Strange Way of Life, starring Pedro Pascal and Ethan Hawke, will premiere in May at the Cannes Film Festival. The director broke the news on Dua Lipa Podcast “At Your Service”.

Almodóvar called the half-hour film “a weird Western, in the sense that there are two men and they love each other”. He added that Pascal’s and Hook’s characters “behave in this situation in the opposite way”.

Almodóvar said, “It has to do with masculinity in a deep sense, because the West is kind of male.” “What I can tell you about the movie is that it has a lot of Western elements—it’s got a gunslinger, it’s got a ranch, it’s got a sheriff—but what most Westerns don’t have is the kind of dialogue I don’t think a Western movie has ever captured between two men. Now I think I I tell you often.”

The short film was shot in English and set at El Deseo, the Madrid-based production company of the Almodóvar brothers. “Strange Way of Life” begins with a man, Silva, riding a horse through the desert to Bitter Creek. He has come to visit Sheriff Jake. Twenty-five years ago, the two men worked together as hired gunmen. Silva comes over under the pretense of reuniting with his friend from youth, but the next morning, Sheriff Jake tells him that the real reason for his visit is not memories of their old friendship.

Almodóvar previously explained that the film’s title echoes a popular fado name written and sung by Amalia Rodrigues. Her lyrics claim that there is no existence more alien than that of one who disregards one’s desires – which raises the question of just how much a movie can evoke desire.
