Former Iron Man actor Robert Downey Jr. addresses Quentin Tarantino’s recent comments about pop culture’s presence in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. In a recent interview with Limit, Downey was asked about comments Tarantino and other directors have made about Marvel films in recent years, including Tarantino’s argument that some actors who play iconic superhero roles aren’t stars themselves. Downey had a lengthy response to the comments, arguing that the landscape in the industry is getting more nuanced than that.
“I think our opinions on these things say a lot about us,” Downey explained. “I think we are in a time and a place where I contributed unintentionally, where intellectual property took precedence over principle and character. But it’s a double-edged sword. Part of intellectual property is just as good as the human talent you get to represent it, and you can get some great IP even if It was coming from an auteur or a writer-director’s national treasure, and if you don’t have the right kind of artist playing that role, you’ll never know how good it could have been. I think creatively it’s a waste of time to be at war with ourselves. I think That this is when everything is so much more fragmented now that I think you have this kind of ramification.Throwing stones in one direction or the other…And I’ve had my reactions in the past when people said things that I felt tarnished my integrity…I go , “you know what?
