Brian Snitker makes it look like Dansby Swanson is really gone

Atlanta Braves manager Brian Snicker is already preparing for the worst – that Dansby Swanson will follow Freddie Freeman out the door.

When free agency began, it seemed almost certain that Dansby Swanson would re-sign with the team that drafted him, the Atlanta Braves. In a sport where legacy and history reign supreme, Swanson has a chance to become one of Atlanta’s true baseball legends.

Unfortunately, it’s not clear if Swanson or the Braves feel the same way, or are even on the same page in this department. Swanson has shopped his services to the likes of the Chicago Cubs and St. Louis Cardinals. Louis Cardinals, among others.

Brian Snicker is ready if Dansby Swanson leaves the Braves

Atlanta Braves manager Brian Snicker discussed the possibility of losing Swanson for just one season after Freddie Freeman moved to Los Angeles with the Dodgers. It’s a grim outlook, but Snitker has dealt with it.

“It’s tough,” Snicker said, telling Dave O’Brien of The Athletic (Subscription required). “We went through it a year ago (with Freeman), and now we’re going through the same thing. And it’s hard. Because you relate to these guys. Oh my God, we spend so much time together, they’re such excellent people. I love him to death. But that’s part of the job. We all know That when we get here, that’s part of it. Time will tell which way we go. I’ll always be rooting for that kid.”

Snitker is always honest, if ever.

Freeman letting the Braves definitely hurt them last year, and the franchise is still picking up. Matt Olsson is solid, but it’s not Freeman, who was among the Premier League leaders in strike rate in 2022.

Swanson would account for a similar loss. While Vaughn Grissom is a talented person, he’s only 21 years old. Dansby is coming off a career year, and his first All-Star appearance.

The Braves front office has saved a lot of money in recent years by signing stars like Ozzie Albies and Ronald Acuña in team-friendly deals. Surely they can afford to be a little extravagant, right?
