This wouldn’t be the first Batman / spawn Crossover: McFarlane and Frank Miller made their film debut in 1994 as the one-shot comedy Spawn/Batman. This comic (set in the Miller continuity The Dark Knight Returns) in the same year by Batman / Spawn: Demon of War, which was done without MacFarlane on the creative team (Doug Munch, Alan Grant, and Chuck Dixon). With nearly three decades since then, MacFarlane has come close to this new Batman / spawn Project Reboot More than a sequel:

“The easy thing about it is that it was 25 years ago when I drew the first one. It’s kind of like doing a movie 25 years ago. It’s like, we’re not doing remakes. It’s like a McFarlane reboot,” he explained. Capital. “I wasn’t worried about the reader reading past reads, and if you’re interested, you can get it now. DC reprints it. But what Greg and I do is re-Egg Day and the Batman story without worrying about what came before.”

Over the course of many years, Batman and Spawn have both evolved and changed. MacFarlane and Capullo addressed what fans can expect from the new era of these characters meeting up after they’ve evolved so much:

“The personalities are very different,” Capullo explains. “Spawn will kill or do anything – he’s a mercenary from hell. Batman is very special to me. Why is he so cool and great because he gets the chance to claim either the victim or the victory. He may have been an alcoholic or a drug addict, but he didn’t. Willpower These make the character very distinct and recognizable. Spawn is the opposite of that. There are no moral barriers to keeping him in line and doing anything. That’s what separates them. But they are both skilled physical fighters. Batman doesn’t cross the line to kill, but if he does, he’s on equal footing With Spawn. That’s how I see them and describe them.”

“I would say that combining the two together is different in comics than anything else,” said MacFarlane. “Outside of the comics, the Batman brand is much stronger, especially on a global level. Spawn isn’t what Batman is in that arena. In the comics, they’re a lot closer. In the past, Spawn has outperformed Batman. The two people being next to each other are amazing.” Not a gimmick, they’re both A-list. It’s fun to do this with any of the industry heavyweights. This is just going back to what worked before, for a whole new generation of fans that you didn’t read together the last time we did this. Maybe. You heard about it, but you haven’t been able to share it with them at the moment. Not until now.”

Batman / spawn #1 will go on sale Tuesday, December 13th.
