Shawn Michaels is currently running things in WWE NXT, and on Saturday the brand will be launching a new match type, the Iron Survivor Challenge. Carmelo Hayes is part of Iron Man’s Survivor Challenge, and he’s going to face some stiff competition for a shot at the NXT Championship. Hayes recently spoke to Dennis Salcedo about working in NXT with Michaels during WWE’s new Triple H era, and while not much has changed for Hayes specifically, he has said that he believes Michaels has a lot more freedom these days than he did before.
“I don’t see a massive change. I mean, necessarily. I think Sean now has a little bit more freedom that he didn’t have before,” Hayes said. “You know, because Hunter and Sean are so close, it’s more of a collaborative effort. You know where there’s like, ‘Hey, we’re going to do this’ and I don’t know if it’s necessarily like, ‘Hey, can I?’ I don’t know, I don’t really know. “
NXT previously dropped version 2.0 of their name and added some black and gold to their logo, though it wasn’t a full return to old-fashioned NXT. In a previous interview with ComicBook.com, Michaels said the new NXT was slated to be more of a hybrid product, combining the best elements of the two eras into one modern interpretation.
“I certainly don’t want to downplay anything, but I don’t know that it’s a new era where there’s a huge change,” said Michaels. “Sure, there was black and gold, there was 2.0 and now we have it, I think what I think is a hybrid. I mean, we don’t want this NXT to be defined as anything other than your NXT, to be completely honest. I don’t want that to be it. Hunter, Vince or even Lee for that matter. This is NXT that belongs to the men and women of NXT that belong in our system and to those passionate, loyal fans watching some support us, to be completely honest.”
“This business, WWE and the wrestling business as a whole has always been about fun, fun, and entertainment, and that’s what it’s going to come back to. I don’t know if that’s been missing over the past several years, but one thing we’re all excited about is that we’re looking forward to achieving our goal and having a ton of fun. And have fun in the years to come.” And that honestly, I think, I don’t know if that’s a catchphrase or if that’s a mission statement, but it’s just that NXT is excited about developing young men and women who are going to be superstars, and the Raw and SmackDown stars of tomorrow.”
