Netflix isn’t letting the holiday season dampen its quest to cancel every original TV show that doesn’t pull Stranger Things numbers. Fresh from binning The Midnight Club earlier this month, Limit (Opens in a new tab) Reports indicate that the streamer has now dropped Warrior Nun after two seasons on the platform.
Based on Ben Dunn’s comic book series Warrior Nun Areala, this TV adaptation stars Alba Baptista as Ava Silva, a 19-year-old girl who wakes up in a morgue and discovers she’s been resurrected to become part of the ancient Order of the Sword Crusader. Tasked with fighting demons on Earth and with a strange divine artifact embedded in her back, Ava must contend with the powerful forces of Heaven and Hell that she both want to find and control.
Besides Baptista, the series also featured Toya Turner, Silvia De Fante, Lorena Andrea, Christina Tonteri-Young, and Olivia Delcan. Simon Barry served as creator and showrunner across the two seasons. Barry responded to the news on Twitter (Opens in a new tab) By sharing a short message where they thanked the “fans who have worked so hard to bring awareness to the series” as well as all the support given to the show’s cast and creative team.
I just found out that netflix will not be renewing #WarriorNun – my sincere appreciation to all the fans who have worked so hard to bring awareness to this series, and to the love you have shown me, the entire cast and production team. It was a privilege to be a part of this. ❤️ pic.twitter.com/eZIBa4tJYmDecember 13, 2022
As you might expect, Warrior Nun viewers didn’t take special kindness to the news of its cancellation. Social media was filled with frustrated fans expressing their frustration at her demise, there was even one petition (Opens in a new tab) He started asking Netflix to reconsider. At the time of writing, it has collected nearly 20,000 signatures.
Why was Warrior Nun canceled by Netflix?
Season 1 of Warrior Nun consisted of 10 episodes and debuted in July 2020. It was apparently successful enough for Netflix to quickly commission more, and a shorter eight-episode second season only debuted last month. However, just over 30 days later, Netflix pulled the plug. Apparently the streamer wasn’t impressed with Warrior Nun season 2’s performance and deemed the third installment not worth the cost.
As reported by Deadline, the second season of Warrior Nun spent only three weeks on the Netflix most-watched list, peaking only at #5. It generated more than 26 million hours watched in its first week, and nearly 28 million hours in its second week. . And while those numbers may sound impressive, they’re a far cry from the one-billion-hour-watching threshold it passed on Wednesday in just three weeks.
Overall, Warrior Nun was reasonably received. His first season scored a respectable 69% Rotten tomatoes (Opens in a new tab), while its sophomore season was a perfect 100% — admittedly, its sophomore season was reviewed by far fewer outlets. Additionally, the show has garnered a passionate fan base, which is clearly evidenced by its 97% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. Unfortunately, Warrior Nun seems to have built up an enthusiastic viewer base, not a huge one, which made its cancellation somewhat inevitable.
Warrior Nun is far from the first axe-facing fantasy series on Netflix this year. It now joins the ever-growing list of Netflix shows canceled in 2022, a raft of content that also includes First Kill and Fate: The Winx Saga. It’s definitely been a bad year for Netflix subscribers who enjoy high-concept fantasy shows.
And it’s not just fantasy shows that have faced the outage, everything from copycat dramas to zany cartoons have been canceled on Netflix in recent months. Fingers crossed Warrior Nun is Netflix’s latest casualty of the year – but given that triggers lead to a happy approach to canceling shows, we certainly wouldn’t bet on that.
