With Carlos Correa rumors swirling about the Twins and the Giants, a third “surprise team” has reportedly entered the equation.
Buckle up, New York Mets fans, it looks like Steve Cohen’s spending spree isn’t over and his most amazing signing is yet to come.
It’s been a reckless winter for the Mets, who lost Jacob DeGrom but somehow turned that into a win in free agency. Cohen was given the $185 million that the Mets would have needed to spend to match the offer DeGrum agreed to with the Texas Rangers and completely rebuild the New York tournament.
While it seems like an insane coup at the moment, the rush hasn’t quenched Cohen’s thirst to spend his way to fix his team and get fans’ hopes back. It appears he has his sights set on one of the largest fish left in the freelancer’s pond.
According to Ken Rosenthal of the athleteThe Mets were surprisingly entered into the Carlos Correa sweepstakes.
“I would say there is some smoke,” said one of the Mets people. “I’m not sure how big the fire is, though.”
As it stands, only the Minnesota Twins and San Francisco Giants were serious contenders for signing Correa. In fact, the most surprising thing about the whole thing was the fact that the Twins—a team that never spent big and had long prided themselves on being a little ball club—were the supposed front runner.
That all changes with the Mets entering the equation.
Minnesota may still be the leader in the club, but Korea’s price is likely to rise with Cohen’s deep involvement. San Francisco is also reportedly exciting for Korea to correct the loss on first goal Aaron Judge.
