Could Lobo appear in James Gunn’s Superman reboot?

Lobo is an interesting character for DC. One of the most popular characters to appear in the 1990s, he was created by Keith Geffen in the 1983 issue of Omega menbut he didn’t really come into his own until his villainous persona was reinvented as Intense ’90s Antero. As a cosmic bounty hunter, the main man has clashed with Superman more than once, but has also had to work with the Man of Steel on several occasions. This, along with James Gunn’s Mastodon post featuring the character, has led some fans to wonder if Lobo might appear in Gunn’s next Superman movie.

Lobo is best known as a stand-alone character, and his best stories are those that poked fun at the excesses of ’90s comics by calling them not 11 but even 33. However, he’s had plenty of memorable interactions with Superman – so much so that in recent years, Lobo’s attempts to revitalize him have often taken him back to the Superman mythos.

Emmett J. Scanlan, who previously played roles Constantine and in Guardians of the Galaxyto play Lobo Krypton, the short-lived and critically acclaimed Superman prequel series. In it, Lobo finds himself in a hostile alliance with Adam Strange (Shawn Sipos) and Superman’s grandfather, Sig-L (Cameron Cave).

Shortly thereafter, Warner Bros.’s DC Universe animated series rebooted. Home Entertainment restarted its line. first outing? Superman: The Man of Tomorrowwhich pitted a younger version of the hero (Darren Criss) against Lobo (Ryan Hurst).

As a cosmic bounty hunter, getting Lobo into a Superman movie would be pretty easy: for one reason or another, someone — another villain, presumably, to set up a sequel — wants Superman to be brought down or brought to them. Lobo is assigned to the position, and a hilarious existence ensues.

Since Lobo enjoyed a brief stint as one of DC’s biggest names in the ’90s, there have been a number of actors who know the character, and have expressed interest in playing him. Jason Momoa is getting closer to the top of that list, especially after a report surfaced earlier this month that suggested he might leave the role of Aquaman behind and become Lobo instead.

“The only person I want to play is DC and Lobo. He’s badass,” Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice Actor Jeffrey Dean Morgan said two years ago. “Lobo would be so great. I don’t think I’m as big as Lobo, but if you could plant Mickey Rourke’s body on my head, that would be great.”

and recently, Gotham Actor Todd Stashwick posted a photo of himself smoking a cigar, along with one of Lobo’s doing so, on social media.

At this point, all of Lobo’s speculation (and almost all of the others, except that Gunn is writing a Superman movie for a new actor) is just speculation. However, Lobo seems to be a character whose name keeps popping up – and he’s been closely associated with Superman for years now. Only time will tell if it can actually happen.
