Guillermo del Toro criticizes AI animation: an insult to life itself

Guillermo del Toro echoed Hayao Miyazaki’s words recently Requested by Decider On animations created from AI resources and machines: “It’s an insult to life itself.” Del Toro is making the press rounds in support of his Netflix movie “Pinocchio,” a hand-crafted stop-motion movie that goes directly against machine-produced animation.

“I consume and love art made by people,” del Toro said. “I was totally taken by this. And I’m not interested in illustrations made by machines and extrapolations of information. I spoke to Dave McCain, a great artist. He told me his biggest hope is that AI won’t be able to draw.”

Del Toro continued, “An AI can interpolate information but can never draw. It can never capture the feeling, look, or softness of a human face. If that conversation were about film it would hurt deeply and … as Miyazaki says, it would be an insult to life itself.” “.

In a viral moment of the 2016 documentary series “NHK Special: Hayao Miyazaki – The One Who Never Ends,” the co-founder of Studio Ghibili’s namesake criticized machine-generated animation. Miyazaki was shown an animation of a zombie-like creature created by artificial intelligence, an idea he opposed.

“Whoever makes these things has no idea what pain is at all,” Miyazaki said. “I am absolutely disgusted. If you really want to make scary stuff, you can go ahead and do it. I would never want to incorporate this technology into my work ever. I feel very strongly that this is an insult to life itself.”

After being informed that an animator was attempting to create a machine that would “draw pictures like humans,” Miyazaki replied, “I feel like we’re nearing the end of an era. We humans are losing faith in ourselves.”

Studio Ghibli announced on December 13 that Miyazaki’s long-awaited directorial effort, “How Do You Live”, will premiere in theaters in Japan starting July 14, 2023. The project is Miyazaki’s first film since 2013’s “The Wind Rises”. Meanwhile, Del Toro’s “Pinocchio” is now available to stream on Netflix.
