Jerry Jones delivers the Cowboys’ most notable OBJ update to date

Jerry Jones isn’t done promoting Odell Beckham Jr. In the Dallas Cowboys story so far.

One minute it looked like Odell Beckham Jr. and the Dallas Cowboys were a sure partnership, and the next it seemed like a remote possibility. With Beckham still not signed midway through December, NFL fans are looking for any kind of update on where the wide receiver has landed.

On Friday morning Jerry Jones gave us what we were looking for.

According to Jones, the Cowboys were close to signing Beckham. Speaking to USA Today, Here’s what he said:

“Odile will be joining us,” Cowboys owner Jerry Jones told USA TODAY Sports Thursday. “There’s a good chance he’ll do that, with the whole goal of getting ready for a playoff game or two, and then I’ll look ahead. But most of it is going on now.”

We knew the Cowboys were still looking for a deal with Beckham. The end of the Cowboys-Beckham saga appears to be near. Thank God it wasn’t actually a waste of time as it seemed.

The Jerry Jones quote leaves a lot of questions about the decade

The bigger question, of course, is whether or not this is a long-term deal. Based on how Jones phrased his statement, it appears that this is not the case.

Beckham was looking at a multi-year contract with this deal, but it seemed as though the Cowboys were completely reluctant to go there, along with other teams. Beckham was unsuccessful in visiting Giants, Bills and Cowboys facilities.

The Cowboys leaked his medical writings revealing Beckham wasn’t fit to play and probably won’t even be in the playoffs, according to Micah Parsons. Beckham then indicated that he saw no point in the regular season games.

It would have been a strategic play, putting Beckham’s cards right there on the table to keep bids down and ensure Dallas got a good deal. If this was Jones’ play, it was a gamble given that Beckham could have pulled away completely.

The hedge, though, is that the Cowboys added TY Hilton recently, so if they add Beckham as well, they’ll have several veteran receivers to raise what their offense can be. To a large extent, it was based on the ground match with Ezekiel Elliott and Tony Pollard this season. Jones previously indicated that adding Hilton didn’t stop them from adding Beckham, either.

We’ll see if this pays off for sure. Jones has indicated a shared interest between the team and OBJ in the past, but this is the clearest quote yet. Not since he appeared on the field at a Mavs game with fellow Cowboys prospects have we felt so close to him in Dallas.
