Married pop and rock stars are twice as likely to get divorced – study music | entertainment

Top actors and sports stars also have a higher chance of breaking up than non-celebrities, but musicians top the divorce lists.

Researchers from the Marriage Foundation tracked nearly 500 celebrities who tied the knot between 2001-2010 in ceremonies featured in Hello or similar magazines.

The study found that six out of ten marriages involving musicians ended in divorce, compared to three out of ten marriages to non-celebrities.

Stars of stage and screen fared marginally better at a divorce rate of five in ten, while sports stars and celebrities had a divorce rate of four in ten.

In a report published today, the Marriage Foundation warns that being famous seems to put a particular strain on relationships.

He said, “It’s easy to imagine a celebrity world hanging out all over you and telling you how amazing you are. It’s also easy to imagine a celebrity world filled with attractive alternatives that provide temptation and opportunity.”

Harry Benson, director of research at the Marriage Foundation, said: “Being famous puts stress on marriages, especially when couples are separated for long periods.

“The second lesson is for management companies and the hordes of agents, advertisers, etc. that surround these celebrities about the need to do more to support them.”

However, the study also found that celebrities who manage to stay together for at least 16 years actually have a lower divorce rate than the general public.

Benson added, “The rewards are clear for those celebrities who make it through the early years of marriage. For those who have been married for 18 years, their divorce rate is half that of the general public. This is good news for these couples and good news for marriages.”

For those of us who lead ordinary lives, having a reasonable income helps keep the relationship together while couples who struggle with money are more likely to break up.
