Will the DC Universe recast Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman?

Now, more than ever, the landscape of the DC Universe is being speculated. With James Gunn and Peter Safran now serving as co-CEOs of DC Studios, the potential for a fully connected universe of film, television, and video games has arguably never been brighter. But the pair’s “bible” has already led to some surprising changes to the existing canon, most recently the news that Henry Cavill will be recast as Clark Kent/Superman, with a new, younger actor stepping in to play the character in a movie penned by Gunn. This, along with recent news that Patty Jenkins is repeating Wonder Woman 3 No longer in action, he wondered what the future held for the star of that franchise, Gal Gadot. Could DC Studios eventually rework Gadot as Diana Prince/Wonder Woman, or could she be one of the few components of the previous lingering?

While Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav has repeatedly called Wonder Woman one of the most important components of the future DC franchise, it wasn’t necessarily clear whether or not this would be Gadot. Rumors had previously suggested that Gadot could appear as her character in two of the upcoming 2023 DC films – Shazam! Wrath of the Gods And the Sparkle — but recent reports have indicated that her cameo has now been cut from the final film. This leaves the question of whether or not Gadot’s Wonder Woman can continue the franchise, or whether it could be reworked in favor of another actress unconnected with the thorny traditions of the “Snyderverse.”

Will the DC Universe be rebooted?

As Gunn hinted on social media amid the rumors, the plan going forward is to tell a coherent story that will serve DC’s characters — but the decisions made to get there “will not make everyone happy every step of the way.” It wasn’t clear at this point. Whether or not that will involve a complete reboot of the film’s continuity — in addition to the news of Cavill being recast as Superman, it’s been confirmed that Gunn and Safran have met up with Gadot’s Justice League co-starring Bruce Wayne / Batman actor Ben Affleck about the possibility of directing a film for DC Studios. It’s unclear if this meeting also revolves around the possibility of Affleck playing Batman again, with Gunn teasing that Batman will have a major central console part, or for him to ditch the camera and recast that role as well.

There’s also a scuttlebutt that’s another Gadot Justice League Co-stars Jason Momoa, could finally be cast as Arthur Curry/Aquaman after next year Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom — but it’s possible he’ll return to the DC Universe as the alien bounty hunter Lobo. With Cavill’s paraphrase, Sparkle Star Ezra Miller reportedly quit the franchise for other reasons, and the future of Affleck and Momoa in their murky roles, would certainly be an option to keep Gadot moving forward only, surrounding her with new and reworked versions of the Justice League. It certainly wouldn’t be an impossible decision, given how likable Gadot is in the role, but it would be a unique one nonetheless.

Will Gal Gadot still be Wonder Woman?

Gadot’s social media posts certainly haven’t helped the mystery, as she wrote on Instagram just days before Jenkins’ Wonder Woman 3 came out, that she was excited about the “next chapter” for the character. We’ll just have to wait and see if this post actually ends up predicting what’s to come, or if it will be similar to Cavill’s now-canceled earlier plans for Superman.

“On this day, a few years ago, was the first announcement that I would be playing Wonder Woman,” Gadot wrote. “I was so grateful for the opportunity to play such an amazing, wonderful character and more than anything I am grateful to you. The fans. The most amazing, warm, loving fans in the world. I’m still pinching myself to see if I’ll wake up. I can’t wait to share Her next chapter is with you.”
