“Shazam!” Star Zachary Levi Defends DC’s New Bosses: Give Them A Break

“Shazam!” Star Zachary Levi has weighed in on the recent drama surrounding DC Studios and its new presidents, James Gunn and Peter Safran.

Last week, Gunn and Safran — who became co-chairs and CEOs in October — ruffled some feathers when it was revealed that Gunn is writing a new Superman movie, but Henry Cavill won’t be returning as the iconic hero. The news disappointed many longtime DC fans, causing Jon to address the “loud and unkind” backlash in a Twitter thread on Monday. The decision to recast Superman has cast doubt on several other DC characters, such as Black Adam, with Dwayne Johnson announcing Tuesday that the anti-hero will not be in Gunn and Safran’s “first act of storytelling.”

However, Levy came to Gunn and Safran’s defense Thursday night during an Instagram Live, encouraging DC fans to give the new CEOs “time to make something special.”

“You have no idea the reasons behind any of the decisions that are made. The amount of conjecture, rumors, drama and nonsense that keeps circulating on Instagram and Twitter is laughable. It’s incredibly laughable,” Levy said. Just be patient, give them some space and some time to try and make something really special. And I think it’s something that DC deserves, and something that Snyder tried to do that didn’t materialize in the end, guys.”

He added that Gunn and Safran “don’t make decisions just because they like or don’t like someone. They make decisions based on what’s best for Warner Bros., DC, that studio and the whole entity and they try to get as many fans as possible, as many audience as possible, happy as can be.”

Levy continued, “If you’re out there and you like what came before, you can do that, that’s fine. But you have to realize that there are a lot of people who didn’t like this stuff, and we should always try to reach as wide an audience as possible, and make the biggest happy.” As many people as possible. That’s what we’re in the entertainment world, and that’s what I think Peter and James are trying to do. And it’s not an easy situation, they’ve been handed all this stuff that they’ve already been in quite a bit of a struggle with. So guys, just give them a break. Take it easy. .Take a breath. It’s the holidays for God’s sake. Just go enjoy the holidays, give them some time to enjoy the holidays, and let’s see what happens on the other side of this.”

Levi will star in the sequel, “Shazam! Fury of the Gods”, which is set to be released on March 17, 2023. During his Instagram Live, he raved about the movie, saying “It’s better than the first movie and the first one was really good.” But, even if “Shazam 2” didn’t fare so well, Levy said he has full confidence in Gunn and Safran’s vision.

“Listen, I have no idea what’s going to happen to me in the end. I think I’m on pretty good, I think we’ve made a great movie, and I think it’s going to be good – reasonably, I hope,” he said. “But again, no matter what, if at some point they decide that’s the way we have to go — it’s breaks, that’s how it goes.”
