As you can imagine, we here at CinemaBlend love movies, and every year every member of our staff tries to watch as many of our new releases as possible. This was far from a chore in 2022. While there were certainly titles our staff generally didn’t care for, we also saw quite a few that blew us away. A total of 253 new films have been watched by at least one member of our staff this year – but 10 of these films stand out as favourites.
Each year, the writers, editors, and video staff at CinemaBlend contribute a screening record ranking of all the movies we see on a scale from one (a candidate for worst of all) to five (the movie industry’s best). Films watched by at least five members of our staff were taken into account for our ranking, and you can see the top 10 films that resulted from the extreme tally below.
# 10. Pinocchio by Guillermo del Toro
average score: 4.25/ 5
Guillermo del Toro’s work is certainly appreciated by the CinemaBlend staff (form of water Ranked #1 in our Top 10 of 2017), he delivered another impressive feat this year with his stop-motion adaptation of the Pinocchio. It’s a darker story than most people are used to, but the design is stunning, and it has a beautiful message about loss, grief, and love.

Between his finance bro, sold-out actor, snooty critic, sycophantic assistant, photo-obsessed foodie and more, Mark Millhaud food menu Full of easy-to-hate characters…but that’s ultimately just part of the fun of the movie. It’s a sharp satire about modern class warfare that has some dark and exhilarating twists built into its meal-course centered story structure. Anya Taylor-Joy and Ralph Fiennes shine as the brightest stars, but the whole ensemble is gorgeous.

Plenty of great action movies have hit theaters in the past 12 months, but none has caught our minds quite like SS Rajamouli. $$$$. It’s a gorgeous historical fantasy epic about star-crossed friends (NT Rama Rao Jr. and Ram Charan) individually fighting against oppressive colonialists, and it’s a visual feast that will delight any genre fan. The choreography, both fight and dance, is superb, and the story is propulsive and brilliant – harvesting every second from the film’s massive 182-minute running time.

#7. Batman
average score: 4.326923077/ 5
Given that we’ve seen five different actors play live-action versions of Batman in the last 33 years, it was understandable to suspect another incarnation of the Caped Crusader… but Matt Reeves has made it clear that there’s still a lot that is possible with the character on the big screen. Robert Pattinson delivers a massive, rage-filled performance as the Bruce Wayne who lets a cape and cowl consume his identity, and Batman It presents the vast city of Gotham populated by great classic characters. It’s still hard to believe that Colin Farrell is playing Oswald Cobblepot aka the Penguin.

#6. Fablemans

Steven Spielberg will forever be remembered as one of the greatest artists to express himself through cinema Fablemans It’s a gift for fans who love the way he tells stories and sees the world. Beyond highlighting early inspirations like Trainwreck The greatest show on earthWestern work in The man who shot Liberty Valancealso has an emotional story that sees the film’s young director’s on-screen counterpart understand hard truths from the film’s perspective.

# 5. Emergency
average score: 4.416666667/ 5
Carey Williams emergency He is a sharp and impressive Trojan horse from the movie. At first, you think you’re getting a straight comedy about college kids getting into trouble during an epic party crawl, but it surprises you when the stakes spiral through the roof – as the heroes discover a white girl passed out in their living room and fear imprisonment or death if they call the police. Even with all the drama and commentary on race and policing in 21st-century America, it maintains a sense of humor and strikes a nice vocal balance.

#4 Top Gun: Maverick
average score: 4.416666667/ 5
You see, Joseph Kosinski Top Gun: Maverick He got the same grade point average as emergency, but it ranked higher because it was seen by three times as many members of our staff – and they were all blown away by the amazing cinematic experience the film provides. At this point in his career, Tom Cruise’s name is practically synonymous with the scene, and he delivers eye-catching action thrillers with an engrossing legacy that manages to be even better than its predecessor. It’s amazing to see on the big screen, and it’s a pity it can’t be a permanent installation in theaters all over the world.

#3. The Glass Onion: Takes the mystery out of the cutlery
average score: 4.6/ 5
Writer/director Rian Johnson has faced a great deal of pressure trying to craft a worthy follow-up to the beloved 2019 mystery. Take out the knives…but one of the most important points we make from watching Glass Onion: Takes the mystery out of the cutlery is that we want Johnson to continue telling these stories for the rest of his career. Johnson once again puts together a wonderfully talented cast to play a host of shady characters, and anchoring the whole experience is another terrific transformation from Daniel Craig as Benoit Blanc.

#2. Everything everywhere at once
average score: 4.76/ 5
Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert, credited collectively as Daniels, made one impression in 2016 with their haunting survival drama. swiss army man, and compounded the weirdness of their follow-up yielded a masterpiece. Michelle Yeoh is captivating and brilliant as an unwitting multiverse warrior who must save existence from destruction, and in addition to a stunning performance by Stephanie Hsu, the film has a stunning comeback from Ke Huy Quan. after watching Everything everywhere at onceWe want to see what everyone involved does next.

# 1. Marcel the Bomber with Boots
average score: 4.833333333/ 5
Dean of Camp Fleischer Marcel the projectile with shoes It is a reminder that movies are magic. The movie’s titular character is simply a shell with one googly eye and a pair of pink doll shoes, yet the movie manages to inspire tears as you long for the little guy to be reunited with his lost family and community. Jenny Slate, also credited as a co-writer, brings wonderful life and depth to the character in her vocal performance, and it’s impossible not to love her. Everyone working at CinemaBlend certainly does, which is why it’s rated our #1 movie of the year.
