KKeep in mind that when CalWORKs calculates your family size and income, and cannot include everyone in your household. Depending on the size of your family and where you live, your household income must be below a certain threshold.
You can’t simply collect all of your family’s paychecks Interest checks To see if they meet the income requirements for CalWORKs.
This is so CalWORKs can exclude certain sources of income, such as:
- Supplemental Security Income (SSI)
- Grants and loans
- Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC)
- Federal resettlement/disaster benefits
Steps CalWORKs has taken to assess your income
Step 1: The income that you may get from the above mentioned sources will be disregarded.
Step 2: Your earned income will be checked.
Step 3: For each family member who works, $90 will be deducted from your earned income.
Step 4: Any other unearned income that is not already included, such as Social Security Disability (SSDI), investment income, or other money you receive that is not a salary, is also added.
Step 5 (last step): Your countable accrued income is the amount.
You may qualify for CalWORKs payments if your calculated income is less than the household maximum. Depending on your family size and where you live, the Standard of Needs or Minimum Basic Standards for Appropriate Care (MBSAC) restrictions are established.
However, you should note that your income calculated for purposes of calculating benefits is different from your income calculated for purposes of eligibility. In other words, the MBSAC does not represent the amount of money you will receive if you are approved for CalWORKs.
How do you apply for CalWORKs?
You will need to complete a short initial eligibility form. If you meet the basic eligibility requirements, the county representative will schedule an interview with you, provide additional paperwork for you to complete, and require you to submit further documentation, such as proof of identity and birth certificates.
Ask the staff of your county’s department of social services for assistance (referred to as reasonable accommodation) if your disability makes it difficult for you to complete the standard application process, such as filling out documents for you or having them read to you.
You can apply for Public Assistance or Public Relief if you do not qualify for CalWORKs. If you are facing an emergency situation, chances are you will be able to get some cash right away.
