Excellent sequel to this first-rate team

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers / Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Set the bar pretty high for franchise crossovers, and now the team of Ryan Parrott, Dan Mora, Raul Angulo, and Ed Dukeshire are back for another run. It would be easy to underestimate expectations with a sequel, however Mighty Morphin Power Rangers / Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2 #1 instead builds on the foundation laid in the original series and jumps straight into the exhilarating moments that can only be achieved through that particular pairing, at the end of the issue having one foot firmly on the throttle moving forward. Oh, and it’s pretty awesome, so it looks like the Power Rangers and TMNT are about to deliver another epic adventure no fan should miss.

Parrott gets things moving right from the start, establishing the new status quo and timeline during the first fight. Those unfamiliar with the original series can still pick up most of everything they need to know, and the few questions you might have shouldn’t take anything away from the sheer delight of couples like Donatello and Bailey and Jason and Leonardo, and the trio of April, Trini, and Kimberly.

Parrott clearly admires these characters, and it’s easy to feel that appreciation throughout the issue. While Billy and Donatello are one of my favorite duos, the conversation between Leonardo and Jason is easily one of the better interactions of the entire affair. There’s a great connection between two captains who breathe with each other about their teams, and those who are fans of both teams will adore the history woven into that discussion and the various interactions throughout the issue.

This interest in what makes both teams so interesting continues into the fray, even when things are looking bleak, the trademark banter being well explained, though not at the expense of creating legitimate threats. Rocksteady and Goldar actually feel as if they could give both teams a run for their money, though the most impressive transformation is the Turtles villain which I won’t spoil here. Needless to say, he’s rarely portrayed as creepy and as much of a legitimate threat as he is here, and it’s only going to get you hyped up even more to see what Mora and Angulo can do with every other bad guy in the Turtles’ catalog.

Mora, Angulo, and Dukeshire are simply on fire here, and it really is something special when Rangers and Turtles are on the same battlefield. Raphael is simply a beast, as is Casey Jones, and while some elements of the case may not exactly surprise you, they do present promising opportunities for the story and for the battles to come.

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers / Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2 No. 1 is exactly what I hoped it would be, and fans of both teams are in for some really great moments delivered in stunning style, and No. 2 issue can’t get there soon enough.
