LineageOS 20 based on Android 13 is here, bringing new features and a new default camera app

LineageOS 20 is here, based on Android 13, and it has a ton of new features, and even better, a new default camera app!

LineageOS is a well-known player in the field of custom Android development. It was the successor to CyanogenMod and now supports a large number of devices, providing a way for enthusiasts to customize and optimize their systems without getting bogged down by heavy skins. The LineageOS team recently released a major update, LineageOS 20, which is based on Android 13.

New features in LineageOS 20

LineageOS 20 comes with several new features and improvements:

  • The April 2022 to December 2022 security patches are integrated into LineageOS 17.1 through 20.
  • LineageOS now has a new camera app called Aperture! It’s based on the awesome Google site (mostly) X camera Library It provides a much closer “store” camera app experience on many devices. Huge kudos to the developers SebaUbuntu, LuK1337 and luca020400 who initially developed this Vazguard builder, and to the entire team for working to integrate it into LineageOS and adapt it to our huge range of supported devices!
  • WebView updated to Chromium 108.0.5359.79.
  • The volume panel has been completely redesigned in Android 13 and the pop-up side expansion panel has been upgraded.
  • Full support for Generic Kernel Image and Linux 5.10 releases with full out-of-the-tree module support to match new AOSP conventions.
  • Lineage fork in AOSP Gallery app has many fixes and improvements.
  • The Updater app has seen several bug fixes and improvements, along with a great new Android TV design
  • Our web browser, Jelly has seen many fixes and improvements
  • More changes and improvements made to FOSS guitar Calendar app they integrated some time back
  • More changes and improvements back up to Sydvolt Backup application.
  • The Recorder app has been adapted to take into account Android’s built-in features, while still providing the features you’ve come to expect from LineageOS.
    • The application has been extensively researched.
    • Supporting material has been added.
    • High Quality Recorder (WAV format) now supports stereo, and several threading fixes have been made.
  • Android TV now ships with an ad-free Android TV player, unlike Google’s ad-supported player — it also supports Google TV-style builds, and they’re evaluating moving to it on supported devices in the future.
  • Many Google TV features, such as the more attractive two-panel Settings app, have been carried over to the LineageOS Android TV versions.
  • adb_root The service is no longer tied to the build-type property, allowing for greater compatibility with many third-party root systems.
  • Merge scripts have been greatly overhauled, simplifying the Android Security Bulletin The integration process, as well as making supporting devices such as Pixel devices that have full source versions more streamlined.
  • LLVM has been fully embraced, with builds now defaulting to using the LLVM container tools and optionally, the LLVM integrated wrapper. For those with older kernels, don’t worry, you can always opt out.
  • The general light mode of quick settings is developed so that this widget matches the device theme.
  • The setup wizard has seen an adaptation of Android 13, with a new design and smoother transitions/user experience.

LineageOS 20 Aperture, a new default camera app

slot

If you’ve ever used the default camera app on LineageOS, you might be disappointed. “Snap”, the name of the app, was a fork of Qualcomm’s camera app, and they eventually moved to using the default AOSP camera app. It made use of the Camera2 API, which is simply too simplistic for most people. That’s why Aperture is such a big deal.

Aperture uses the CameraX API, which in recent years has matured into usability for the entire Camera application. Aperture is able to implement the following features thanks to it:

  • Support for additional cameras (must be enabled by device admins)
  • Video frame rate controls
  • Full control over EIS (Electronic Image Stabilization) and OIS (Optical Image Stabilization) settings
  • Leveling tool to check the angle of the machine orientation

General goals

Just like the last two releases, the LineageOS team supports Android Virtual Device (AVD), that is, the virtual emulator environment provided by Android Studio, construction targetLineageOS 19 added support for Android Automotive build targets as well. Developers can build Generic System Image (GSI) packages in both mobile and Android TV configurations as well, although none of these pre-compiled builds will be hosted by the official download portal. This is because it depends on how well the OEM has complied (or not complied) with Treble’s requirements to work.

What if my device is not listed here?

Just because your device isn’t listed here doesn’t mean you won’t be able to enjoy LineageOS 20 right now. Due to its open source nature, there are a number of unofficial builds for various devices on our forums, many of which will eventually end up becoming official builds as development progresses. What’s more: Most of them are, for now, quite stable as daily drivers, with occasional minor quirks.

How to upgrade to LineageOS 20 from an older version

If you are not familiar with the process of installing custom ROMs or modding your phone, you will first need to unlock your device’s bootloader and install an updated custom recovery, such as LineageOS Recovery or TWRP before attempting to do anything. Then, once the official LineageOS 20 builds are available for your device, you will need to install them through this custom recovery environment. The instructions for the device may vary, therefore Check the corresponding wiki for your device pre.

As for Google Apps, it does not come pre-installed on the LineageOS version. You need to choose a suitable GApps distribution and install it yourself.
