Notre Dame fans melt as they trail South Carolina in the Gator Bowl

Notre Dame fans were ready to fire coach Marcus Freeman and blow up the roster after they fell behind South Carolina in the Gator Bowl.

The 2022 season has been a mixed bag for Notre Dame fans. Things could not have started worse with Marcus Freeman losing his first two matches. It remained shaken as Cal nearly sacked the Irish and Stanford actually did. Then things got good, after five straight wins indicating the team had turned a corner.

However, a loss to USC to finish the regular season caused some things to shine. Losing to South Carolina in the Gator Bowl will take away all the good vibes of a few weeks ago.

This is likely why Fighting Irish fans reacted so hard while watching Notre Dame trail to the Gamecocks 21-7 early on.

Notre Dame has been used to a certain level of success under Brian Kelly. His departure to LSU prompted Freeman’s promotion. However, the jury is still out on whether this was the right move.

The slow start to the bowl game did little to inspire confidence among Notre Dame fans. There was a lot of play for ND, but pride is important for fans around bowl season. So is the feeling that their program is going in the right direction. This is certainly not the case for those in South Bend.

The Irish eventually caught up to South Carolina. Two touchdowns in the second quarter and another point to start the third that tied things up at 24.

After the Gamecocks immediately regained a seven-point lead with a 42-yard touchdown pass from Spencer Rattler to Xavier Legette, Tyler Buechner and company got things going again with a 44-yard touchdown pass to Braden Lenzy just before the fourth quarter.

The two teams went into the final frame tied at 31.
