Singer Anita Pointer of The Pointer Sisters has died at the age of 74

Anita pointerone of four sibling singers to garner pop successes and critical acclaim as Pointer SistersHer publicist announced Saturday that she will be 74 years old.

Publicist Roger Neal said in a statement that the Grammy Award winner died while she was with her family. The cause of death was not immediately revealed.

“While we are deeply saddened by the loss of Anita, we are comforted to know that she is now with her daughter, Jada, and her sisters June and Bonnie And at peace. It was she who kept us all close and together for so long,” her sister Ruth teases Aaron and Fritz Roxy McCain-Poynter’s granddaughter said in the statement.

And Jada Poynter, the only daughter of Anita Poynter, died in 2003.

Born to the daughter of a pastor, Anita, Ruth, Bonnie, and John Poynter grew up singing at their father’s church in Oakland, California.

The group’s 1973 self-titled debut album included the song “Yes We Can Can”. Best known for their hit songs including “I’m So Excited,” “Slow Hand,” “Neutron Dance,” and “Jump (For My Love),” the singer earned a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1994.

The 1983 album “Break Out” was awarded three platinum awards and won two American Music Awards. Neil said the group won three Grammy Awards and had 13 US Top 20 hit songs between 1973 and 1985.

Neil said The Pointer Sisters were also the first African-American group to perform on the Grand Ole Opry and the first contemporary work to be performed at the San Francisco Opera House.

Bonnie Pointer left the group in 1977, signing a solo deal with Motown Records but to only modest success. “We were devastated,” Anita Poynter said of her departure in 1990. “We did a show the night she left, but then, we just hung out. We thought it wouldn’t work without Bonnie.”

June Pointer died of cancer at the age of 52 in 2006

The group, in various line-ups including younger family members, continued recording until 1993.

Bonnie Pointer’s death from cardiac arrest at the age of 69 in 2020 was announced by Anita Pointer. “The Pointer Sisters would not have happened without Bonnie,” she said in a statement.
