The departure of Vince McMahon changed the main event

At the first WrestleMania without Vince McMahon, there was a change in the big match he was planning.

With the new year upon us, that means WWE is officially in WrestleMania season. This will be the first time Vince McMahon is not working on creativity, as he retired due to sexual misconduct and hush money allegations reported by The Wall Street Journal. With Triple H now running the creative department of its television programming, one of the matches planned for WrestleMania 39 is reportedly no longer on the table.

According to Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling ObserverRonda Rousey vs. Becky Lynch is no longer in the plans for WrestleMania 39.

“Immediately, [Lynch vs. Rousey] said Meltzer, h/t Wrestling Observer. Things change, like we said.

“I don’t know what a Ronda match or a Becky match is, but as of today, as of this morning, I’m told it’s very unlikely, and another guy with a very good connection said, ‘I hear she died’ and I asked him and he didn’t die because nothing is dead in WWE. Someone could get hurt and… but it’s definitely not the plan right now.”

Ronda Rousey vs. Becky Lynch is reportedly no longer planned for WrestleMania 39

Rousey and Lynch have never had such a big one-on-one match on WWE pay-per-view. While they participated in the main event of WrestleMania 35 back in 2019, the match was a triple threat match also involving Charlotte Flair for both the Raw and SmackDown Women’s Championships. Lynch won that match by pinning Rousey with a combo.

This past January, Rousey returned to WWE for the first time since the aforementioned WrestleMania match, winning the women’s Royal Rumble match as the 28th entrant. Rousey challenged Flair for the SmackDown Women’s Championship at WrestleMania 38, but lost. Rousey would win the championship at WrestleMania Backlash in an I Quit match.

After regaining the SmackDown Women’s Title from Liv Morgan at Extreme Rules in October, Rousey lost it to Flair on the final episode of 2022 on Friday Night SmackDown.

As for Lynch, she most recently made her return to Survivor Series last November after suffering a shoulder injury at SummerSlam in July. Lynch was the Raw Women’s Champion entering WrestlemMania 38, where she lost to Bianca Belair.

It’s currently unknown what matches are planned for Rousey and Lynch at WrestleMania, but we should get a clearer picture once we get closer to the April 1 and 2 shows.
