Dominic Smith stays in the NL East for the ultimate revenge on the Mets

Former New York Mets linebacker Dominic Smith has signed with Washington.

Former Dominic Smith First round pick of the Mets who didn’t turn out as planned. While he had a string of success—notably in the shortened 2020 season when he finished 13th in NL MVP voting—Smith could rarely return to those heights.

In 58 games this past season, Smith failed to make it to Mendoza’s line, thus sealing his fate as an “ex” deadlift heading elsewhere this offseason.

Smith served as a proving choice for Washington. The Nationals previously signed the Met to a $2 million contract, with potential $2 million in incentives. This decade, it’s a win for the Nets. If Smith succeeds, Washington could deal with him at the trade deadline for prospects. If he fails, they will not lose much in the capital.

Why did the nationals sign dominic smith

Only two seasons removed from his breakout campaign, Dom Smith has plenty of experience in the NL East. While he will only play 13 games against his former team this season, the revenge factor should play a motivating role for Smith and Washington.

Playing for the Shredded Courage for most of the 2021 season, Smith has seen his number dwindle. In 2022, he struggled out of the gate and eventually had to split time with JD Davis, a fight he lost. The 28-year-old was drafted to Triple-A for a short period of time before the call-up, and his stats didn’t improve much after his intended wake-up call.

However, the primary market is dry at this point in free agency. The Nets have a hole there to fill, especially after Josh Bell was traded to the Padres at a deadline last season. Smith will get some playing time, one way or another, on a losing team.
