2023 is just beginning, however, and we already have some major phone news to eat. An alleged Google Pixel 7a prototype has been leaked on a Vietnamese Facebook group; Yes, we’re scratching our heads too.
It seems a bit early for Google’s upcoming budget phone to actually leak in this capacity, but here we are with a device that looks like an evolution of the excellent Pixel 6a from last year. The camera bar looks exactly like the Pixel 7 with its sharper camera lens.

We don’t speak Vietnamese here at Tom’s Guide, and can’t say what’s on the screen, but chunvn8888 says they can confirm that the alleged Pixel 7a comes with a 90Hz display. (You can see the 90Hz signal in one of the images below.) This could be a big deal, especially if Google keeps the Pixel 6a’s $449 price point.

We expect the Pixel 7a to be a budget killer phone, since we’re pretty sure Google will use the Tensor G2 chipset found in the Pixel 7 series on its next budget phone, just like the Pixel 6a got the Tensor G1.
ShrimpApplePro says the device is a DVT, or Design Validation Test. This step in engineering seeks to get the physical details right before the phone goes into production. This is when engineers do things like debug equipment and develop tools for quality assurance.

- Functionality and ease of use
- reliability
- Mechanical test
- environmental impact
- Compatibility
- Mean time between prediction to failure (MTBF)
- Electromagnetic compatibility
- Safety certificate
This, of course, means that if this leaked device is the DVT prototype of the Pixel 7a, the final product could go into mass manufacturing soon. January seems a little early for the Pixel 7a at this point, unless Google plans to release the device earlier than the Pixel A phones. It makes us wonder if the company will launch the phone at its annual I/O conference, scheduled for May. (The Pixel 3a and Pixel 3a XL were launched at Google I/O 2019.)
As always with leaks, take all of this with a grain of salt. Still, we’re excited about the idea of a 90Hz Pixel 7a, but that leaves us concerned that Google might raise the price this year. As long as the MSRP remains under $500, the Pixel 7a could still be a heavy hitter for 2023.
