10 players can help a competitor win a 10-day NBA contract

On Thursday, January 5, NBA teams can officially start signing players to a 10-day contract. Which unsigned free agents can help a competitor?

The 10-day NBA contract officially became available to teams on Thursday, January 5th. But a young up-and-coming, or addressing specific weaknesses like depth, shooting, or veteran experience.

Here are some players available for a 10-day NBA contract who could help the team right now

Jeremy Lamb He struggled last season, and was traded from the Pacers to the Kings in a Domantas Sabonis deal and remained unsigned when his contract expired. But he’s a good size on the wing, some utility as a secondary builder and he’s a decent 3-point shooter.

Sheriff Cooper He has struggled to hit shots at shortstop with the Hawks, but the electric playmaker shoots 25-of-50 from the field and 4-of-10 from outside the arc in three G League games this season, averaging 27.0 points, 6.7 assists and 4.3 rebounds.

Carmelo Anthony He may have no interest in anything but a guaranteed deal for the rest of the season but he’s still not a good fit. He averaged 13.3 points per game and made 37.5 percent of his 3s last season with the Lakers.

Wayne Ellington He doesn’t have a lot of variety in his game but he is a 38.2 percent 3-point shooter. Any team looking for some inexpensive floor spacing should definitely give it a look.

Ben McLemore He hasn’t quite accomplished a movement shooting or positional threat like Lamb, but he did make 36.3 percent of his career 3s, and he’s still only 29 years old and held up reasonably well as a wing defender for the Blazers last season.

Isaiah Thomas He’s played for seven different teams since leaving the Boston Celtics, mostly for just a handful of games. It’s hard to imagine he has much to offer due to his size and injury concerns, but he was happy to lift some shots for a team weak at depth guard.

Paul Millsap He has seen his value as a versatile defender decline with age but he is still a fairly mobile player who can hit the glass and move the ball around when attacking. For a team looking for some experienced depth in the frontcourt, he might not be a bad option.

Grant Riller He’s a diminutive guard with average athleticism by NBA standards, but a lot of NBA players loved him as a sleeper in the 2020 draft. He’s currently in the G League, averaging 31 points, 5.0 assists, and 4.3 rebounds per game. Each game on 49.2 / 42.9 / 94.1 shooting.

Trevelin Quinn is another clever wing builder appearing in G League now. It looked like he might be on to something, as he appeared in 10 games with the Houston Rockets last season before being fired by their young backcourt.

Vernon Carey Jr He appeared in 32 games over the past three seasons with the Wizards and Hornets but found himself unsigned and returned to the J-League. The bruised big man averages 26.3 points, 8.0 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 1.7 steals while shooting 67.4 percent from the field.
