The first day of CES 2023 was full of excitement. Not only have we seen a slew of new laptops announced, but we’ve also gotten new graphics cards from Nvidia and are already working on what could be some of the best TVs of the year.
There’s a lot more to come, since CES hasn’t officially started yet, though press previews are underway. But here’s what we feel are the best and most exciting products from day one of CES 2023.
18 inch gaming laptops
Over the past few years, we’ve seen gaming laptops become thinner and lighter. Well, it seems that trend has been bucked as Alienware, Asus, and Acer have all come out with gaming laptops with an 18-inch display.
Why is that exciting? Well, the specifications of these devices are quite impressive as they not only have the latest Intel Raptor Lake chipset and Nvidia GeForce RTX 40-Series graphics, but also display a high speed refresh rate. Sure, we’ve seen high-spec laptops before, but the combination of components, cooling, and ports all set these laptops up to be a worthy alternative to gaming PC desktops, without sacrificing portability.
As for the specifications offered, the prices of these large laptops seem to be somewhat reasonable, given that high-spec computers are not cheap. Expect these 18-inches to be the must-see gaming laptops this year. In the meantime, check out our hands-on review of the Alienware m18.
LG C3 OLED
We got a chance to hands-on the new LG C3 OLED and LG G3 OLED TVs at CES. And while the latter may be the most unique TV, the former is a must-watch.
While LG C2 OLED buyers won’t see huge upgrades, the C3 offers a new processor, a noticeable boost in brightness, and an updated experience on the WebOS platform, which should provide a better customized experience for viewers.
This may not seem like much, and for LG C1 OLED or C2 owners, these updates likely won’t be enough to warrant an upgrade. But for new OLED TV buyers, this might be the TV to watch since it has all the hallmarks of a great LG OLED TV, and looking at the previous model, we can expect the price to drop in the latter part of 2023.
Nvidia Gear Force RTX 4070t
Although CES has barely begun, Nvidia has already announced the RTX 4070 Ti. In many ways, Nvidia’s GeForce RTX 4070 Ti is just a shortened version of the GeForce RTX 4080, which has suffered a bit of backlash due to its steep pricing. But the GeForce RTX 4070 Ti is priced at $799, which while far from cheap, is at least affordable for PC gamers.
But we’ll likely see more GeForce RTX 40-series cards following in the footsteps of the RTX 4070 Ti, and hopefully decently selected GPUs will be introduced to the market that fall within the budgets of the average gamer. As such, we hope to see the pricier GeForce RTX 4060 before long.
Samsung QN95C Neo QLED TV
With some attractive upgrades, such as support for 144Hz refresh rate and automatic HDR re-mastering, all packed into a sleek design, Samsung’s QN95C Neo QLED TV is arguably the most anticipated QLED TV of the year.
Having seen it in glass and metal, we were impressed with its picture quality and the One Connect box, which offloads inputs into a separate unit and allows for flexibility of installation and use. So, just like the LG C3 OLED, Samsung’s QLED TV could be a device to watch this year.
Acer Swift Go
Right now, the MacBook Air M2 is arguably the laptop to get when it comes to ultraportables, but Acer’s new Swift Go range might give it a run for its money. With its slim design, yet still houses the latest Intel chipset and OLED display, the Swift Go delivers an attractive laptop with solid specs.
The Swift Go comes in both 14in and 16in models, and is also competitively priced, starting at $799 (about £663 / AU$1,164), which will not only undercut the MacBook Air M2, but other slim laptops like Microsoft Surface Laptop 5. We’ll have to see if hitting an attractive price point has resulted in Acer having to make disappointing compromises. But the Swift Go could be an early contender for a spot on our best laptops list if it could mix great specs, sleek design, and a compelling price into one package.
Little honor
We haven’t had a look at this yet, but Samsung’s display arm showed off the Flex Hybrid, a smart device with a fold-and-slide screen that expands a 10.5-inch display with a 4:3 aspect ratio and into a 16:10 12.4-inch screen. Don’t expect it on any foldable devices this year, but it does indicate the direction that foldable phones and tablets could take.
Alienware also showed off a 500Hz display, aimed at esports gamers who want extremely fast response times. Get Tony Polanco’s thoughts on our Alienware 500Hz Gaming Monitor (AW2524H) hands-on review.
