With Warner Bros. Discovery is making a bunch of changes to how their DC Studios unit operates, there’s been some chatter about what will happen to the many films in development. Abrams and Ta-Nehisi Coates’ Black Superman project has to be one of the main projects that keeps coming up, and we were recently assured that the film is still in active development. When DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn revealed that he was writing a Superman reboot that wouldn’t star Henry Cavill, he was hidden in reports that a Black Superman project was still happening. There’s been no confirmation on whether the project will focus on the Val-Zod version of the character or if Clark Kent’s race will be switched, but fans seem to know who they want in the role. One fan even went so far as to create a new concept imagining Star Wars star John Boyega as Val-Zod.
Instagram artist handler @Subi.Ozil created some awesome fan art of the Star Wars star as Val-Zod. In fan art, Boyega gets the classic look of characters like Superman outfitted with white accents. Although a Black Superman movie is in development, with Abrams producing and Coates writing the script, there’s still no word on whether it will actually come to fruition. You can check out the fan art below!
Gunn and Safran both started their jobs as co-CEOs at DC Studios last year, and it’s safe to say DC’s future looks bright. When the duo was announced by the head of Warner Bros. New Discovery, they released a statement about their excitement for the job.
“We are honored to be the stewards of the DC characters we have come to love since we were kids,” John and Safran added in a joint statement. “We look forward to collaborating with the world’s most talented writers, directors, and actors to create an integrated, multi-layered universe that still allows for individual expression by the artists involved. Our commitment to Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Harley Quinn, and the rest of DC’s characters is only equaled by our commitment to the wonders of human possibility that these characters represent. We are excited to revitalize the theatrical experience around the world as we tell some of the biggest, most beautiful, most amazing stories of all time.”
