Outrageous allegations and celebrities tend to work hand in hand, but when a famous person says something too crazy to be true, you can often guess the truth of the statement based on what the celebrity says. So when someone that most fans love and respect says something incredible, you listen. So did Jamie Lee Curtis really invent Instagram? Not really, except, sort of.
the Halloween The scream queen has said, on more than one occasion, that she invented Instagram, and she said it again in a recent appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live, which brought the claim front and center once again. She didn’t go into detail on the show and many wonder why she would say such a thing. It sounds amazing, but it turns out that this claim is much more true than you might imagine.
buzzfeed He worked on this site and discovered the existence of a Blogspot started by Jamie Lee Curtis in the summer of 2010 called avones. Curtis previously said that after she got her iPhone, she started taking a lot of pictures, and found out that a lot of other people did, too, so she set up the site as a place to post pictures. The site is still up and running, so check it out when it goes live, and it also predates Instagram’s launch, if only by a few months.
Apparently, Curtis said that once Instagram launched, people stopped using her site, which created another connection between the two, but that’s not entirely accurate. The last photos uploaded to Blogspot were in early 2012, two years after the launch of Instagram. However, her site seems to be on the brink of extinction coinciding with Facebook’s purchase of Instagram, which may have been a catalyst to get Jamie Lee’s friends to stop using her site and move to Instagram, which is now used by all celebrities.
While I suspect Instagram’s invention claims wouldn’t stand up in court (not that she claimed she would attempt such a thing), there’s no argument that Jamie Lee Curtis independently came up with the idea for the previously launched Instagram photo-sharing site. I mean Two different people invented calculus independently At the same time, even crazier things happened. And it’s not like celebrities haven’t created amazing things that have changed the world. Hedy Lamarr invented the technology behind wi-fi. If Jamie Lee Curtis got credit for inventing Instagram it wouldn’t be that big of a deal.
If she tried to make this something bigger, and not just a photo-sharing site for her friends, who knows, it might have caught on even more than Instagram? Who wouldn’t want to be on Jamie Lee Curtis’ photo-sharing site?
