Like many Brits, I’ve spent the last month completely obsessed with Traitors. So, naturally, I was thrilled to hear that a US version of the reality game show is scheduled to premiere on Peacock on Thursday, January 12th.
In case the wave of interest on this side of the pond hasn’t quite swept the country side, The Traitors is a rival series that originated in the Netherlands. Its near-instant popularity there quickly saw several regional releases across the world, and it’s next US turn as all 10 episodes of the show’s first season will drop on Peacock next week.
The premise of The Traitors is fairly straightforward: 20 contestants are brought together to complete a set of intense challenges in order to make up a cash prize. It all seems fairly straightforward on the surface. But the twist is that some of the contestants are actually “traitors” and will work behind the scenes to steal the prize from the other contestants, known as the “Believers”.
Adding drama to the mix is the fact that traitors are given the opportunity to eliminate the contestants from the shadows. But the Faithful can retaliate by voting players they suspect are traitors – of course, they might accidentally kick out a fellow believer instead.
The British version was a thrilling ride of unexpected twists and psychological mind games. And he’s already created some iconic reality TV moments that are still being shared across social media weeks after the finale aired. The American version of Traitors seems poised to do the same.
Plus, The Traitors on Peacock will feature the A-list reality stars from shows like Big Brother, The Bachelor/Bachelorette, and Survivor. Even better, the show is hosted by the amazing Alan Cumming. Between the proven look and seasoned cast, it all sounds like a recipe for reality TV mayhem — and that’s exactly what we all need to dispel the January blues.
The full list of what to watch in January 2023 is pretty impressive with new shows hitting Netflix, HBO Max, and Disney Plus, but be sure to make time for The Traitors on Peacock. If this American version can live up to the international levels that came before it, it has the potential to be one unmissable season of reality television.
