Fans thought they’d picked things up with Jacob’s nephew, John Dutton Sr., supposedly John’s grandfather, but last week’s episode saw the character die in the tragic shootout. With the prequel offered so far only that John and his wife Emma have one son, Jack, the family tree may be in question, and it turns out that James Badge Dale, who plays John Dutton Sr., himself isn’t entirely clear on the family tree.
talk with Hollywood ReporterDale admitted that they needed a flowchart to track and that even he isn’t entirely clear on the tree, which could change depending on what series creator Taylor Sheridan planned.
Dale said, “I don’t know the tree. We need a flowchart. I saw it on the Internet, when people tried to create it.” I don’t know if it is accurate or not. And that’s the thing, this is Taylor’s world. We can say one thing or think one thing and Taylor can decide another and we’ll watch 1942 and realize it’s a little different and he’ll change it.”
Could Spencer be John Dutton’s grandfather?
It is not impossible that Spencer Dutton is actually John Dutton’s grandfather. At the end of the last episode in 1923, Cara Dutton (Helen Mirren) books Spencer in Africa and tells him about his brother’s death and the possible death of his uncle, and tells him he needs to go home. With Jack’s fiancée also seriously wounded – shot in the abdomen – it seems likely that the next generation of Duttons will come from Spencer and his new fiancée Alex, possibly with their son John being named in honor of Spencer’s brother.
