Three Days Kings with Rosca de Reyes

Downey, California – Rosca de Reyes is a traditional cake enjoyed by Christians around the world on El Día de Los Tres Reyes Magos, or Three King’s Day. It’s a Latin tradition that honors the day the three kings found the newborn Jesus, and it officially marks the end of the holiday season for many in Mexico and Latin America.

Feasting on the “Rosca” cake is a big part of the festivities. Family and friends gather to celebrate. It is a soft, sweet bread made in a round shape that represents God’s eternal love, as well as the king’s crown.

Tropicana Bakery in Downey, California, prepares and bakes thousands of cupcakes in advance of the religious holiday. Jesus, a longtime baker at Tropicana, is an expert at baking the most beautiful and delicious Rosca de Reyes cakes. They plan to bake non-stop through January 6th. Expect a queue when visiting, but it’s worth the wait.

Now, the best part of this tradition is that inside each ‘rusca’ there is a small statue of Jesus hidden inside the dough. Whoever gets or finds the statue in their slide, gets to have a party!
