Leaving the XCOM and Midnight Suns franchise at Firaxis after 14 years

Garth DeAngelis has yet to share anything about his next adventure.

In a recent statement shared via TwitterThe franchise behind the XCOM series and Marvel’s Midnight Suns has revealed the end of his career at Firaxis Games after 14 years.

Garth DeAngelis is a veteran member of Firaxis who worked on XCOM: Enemy Unknown as well as XCOM 2. He was also part of the development team behind the recently published Marvel’s Midnight Suns, which turned into another critically acclaimed title by Firaxis, and another A game that DeAngelis worked on in the studio.

Unfortunately, DeAngelis has not shared anything about his future career in the industry. Therefore, it is still not known what is next for the veteran developer of tactical turn-based strategy games. However, he has received many warm messages from industry veterans and former Firaxis colleagues, wishing DeAngelis the best of luck on his next adventure.

“After 14 years, I am leaving Firaxis,” says Garth DeAngelis. “I couldn’t have asked for more from my colleagues who are dedicated to bringing the XCOM franchise and Marvel’s Midnight Suns back to life. Working on these franchises has truly been a dream come true! So much love to gamers – it’s all for you.”

Firaxis hasn’t revealed anything about who will be taking on the role of Garth DeAngelis at the studio yet.

Currently, we don’t have any clue about Firaxis’ next project after Marvel’s Midnight Suns. Even though the game was released back in December 2022, it received a 30% discount in Steam’s Winter Sale, which could be a sign of missing financial goals for 2K Games, though it’s only an assumption.

Prior to Marvel’s Midnight Suns, Firaxis delivered XCOM: Chimera Squad back in 2020 as a spin-off of the XCOM franchise that featured aliens as playable characters alongside XCOM’s elite squad. Apart from XCOM, Firaxis is also responsible for Sid Meier’s Civilization series, which received its latest installment in 2016.

So, it’s safe to say that Firaxis has some exciting options to choose from for its next project, but we also have to keep in mind the possibility of a new IP similar to Marvel’s Midnight Suns.
